Is this an OK area? London - Hawthorne Close N1 (Dalston)

Does anyone know Hawthorne Close in Dalston? My niece has just moved there and her mum (my sister) is anxious about it from a distance. She lives in Belgium and hasn't been able to help with the flat-hunting, viewing or moving process. She wants to know about the neighbourhood. Thank you in advance.

By the way, I was a regular mumsnetter until a few years ago but my profile seems to have disappeared.. Although my original username is unavailable!! Does one get booted off after a period of inactivity?

My sister lived in Burder close near there and I'm around a 10 mins walk away from there(used to live ttthe other end by the office blocks in Dove Road so sort of know the area) . It's the same as anywhere really. We've never had any trouble, she's not far from very frequent buses or Overground to the west end, Westfield etc.. Shops everywhere. Dalston is getting a big aldi soon to join marks and Spencer, sainsburys and Iceland. Good schools round there to!

That’s the Alwyne estate N1. Estate a mix of private LL, owners and tenants. It is north Islington. Local authority is Islington
It’s inner city London you need to be street smarts but that’s true of all ldn. It’s socially and economically mixed area, has some deprivation
Postcode data set
You can google the estate N1 4AW

Dalston is very trendy. Lots of nice restaurants, bars, independent shops. Great transport links (two overground stations plus some nice cycle routes). Very popular with young tourists.
Increasingly gentrified, lots of properties (period properties) go for over a million pounds so clearly lots of people with money also find it a perfectly pleasant place to live

Assuming she has bought ex-council there. It's fine, I had an ex-council flat near there for seven years and now live about ten mins away next door to a small estate. It's London - there is a patchwork of deprivation alongside the very rich.

Regular big city issues but unlikely to intrude on her life unless she is involved in dealing drugs.

Most annoying thing for me is the rate of bicycle theft atm.

I hope your sister isn't hassling your niece about her choice - there are thousands of young professional women living happily in the area. I'm sure your adult niece has made the right decision for herself.

LOL, the number of young Londoners who would be delighted to move to such a location!

Look, in London people live cheek by jowl with the full mixed demography.

Trust her judgement and stop checking up on her.

The exciting thing about London is that it is so mixed has a buzz, she’ll love being in Islington.
