How much do packers cost?

We're hoping to move late autumn, one bed from London to the north. I think it would be a good idea to get packers in as we both work and have a toddler.

There is quite a lot of stuff as also a small cellar with things in and partner is a stuff person. I know that's not a lot to go on for costings but does anyone have a vague idea? Ballpark is fine and would help me try to persuade partner that this would be seriously less stressful!

Thanks!

About £500 for packing the contents of a 3 bed bungalow (including absolutely loads of china and glass) in the SW earlier this year. I’m vague about the cost because it wasn’t my move, it was a relative’s. Well worth it. Would’ve taken weeks otherwise, whereas packers packed it in a day.

Thank you

It is worth every penny. It was only a few hundred pounds for us and was the best value bit of the whole moving process. I had a toddler at the time. Just do it!

I paid £550 3 years ago to move 2 miles from a 2 bed london flat to a house. Not sure what the difference for a cross country move would be but it is money very well spent - they assemble your furniture for you at the other end!

I went on any van and they gave us 2 quotes instantly with packing and without……. We decided they were pricey ans to do it ourselves and I honestly wish I could go back in time and shake myself. It’s HORRID, I’m surrounded by boxes and clutter and stuff. Pay for the packers!

We are moving from up north down south, and they charge extra as the drivers can only do 12 hour shifts so you have to do it over 2 days. Just as a FYI. To do a 300 miles journey, with a 3 bed house was £1600 ish without packing, £2400 with. We have hired a van for £500 but my therapy and gin bill is going to well surpass the £2400 originally quoted Grin

Packers only work when doing removals. Usually the removals is bulk of cost and packers an add-on of several hundred. Well worth it.

2 bed house- with stuff from garden and loft- moving 10 mins away... fully packed service SE- £1200

Wilmaa · 25/08/2021 19:08

We paid £1800 for 3 bed and moving 10 mins away.

Ours for the packing was £480 + VAT
Large 3 bed house with 3 reception rooms, kitchen, utility, study, 2 bathrooms plus double garage.
Midlands, moving locally.
Absolutely fantastic, great service throughout, well worth every penny.

DM recently moved 250 miles from the SW to Yorkshire, 3 bed house, so the costs aren’t comparable, but the bulk of the cost was in time:
Day 1 pm - removals company drive south, stopped in local b&b
Day 2 - removals company arrived at DM’s house early, packed up house, stopped in b&b
Day 3 - finished packing, loaded vans, drove back north, removals vans locked in depot yard overnight
Day 4 - removals vans arrived at DM’s new house and unpacked

Day 3 was very long!

With a long move, I’m not sure you’d more a day with a 1 bed flat.

Cost was £4K!!!! But DM had done next to nothing and had 4 childhoods of abandoned stuff to move.

Upthread when I said packers cost £500, that was just for the packing element of the move. The whole removal including a two hour journey and a few weeks of storage costs was between 4-5K. The packing wasn’t the major part of the whole cost but absolutely made all the difference to making the move go smoothly.

Givemebackmylilo · 25/08/2021 20:07

No idea on price, however whatever it is it is worth every god damn penny

DomPom47 · 25/08/2021 20:57

Thank you everyone.

Doboopedoo · 25/08/2021 20:58

About £400 for us for a three bedroom house, I think the packers hated us as they told us our kitchen stuff just kept going on forever Blush but it was money amazingly well spent. All done in one day rather than weeks of packing for us. We only moved a couple of miles but stayed in a hotel the night of the move and got stuck into all the boxes the next day. Would absolutely do it again!

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 25/08/2021 22:01

Thank you! Think this has made the argument clear cut for me - especially if the main cost is the drive up anyway

We've got packers coming to move our stuff into storage shortly. All of our moving quotes were inclusive of packing, so not sure of the cost breakdown.

Just wanted to say that paying for packing is very worthwhile. The crew arrives and whizzes through your belongings and makes sure everything is properly packaged. It means you don't need to live with boxes or spends days doing it yourself before moving day.
