How best to improve appearance of neighbours old fence?

The front of our house has a driveway which on one side is fenced.
The boundary fence on that side is owned by the neighbours and is in an awful state with one panel missing completely.

They are not able to replace the fence just yet but plan to when carrying out other works to the front of their driveway which they hope to do next year but is very possibly going to be after that

Do I ask the neighbours if I could paint our side at least. I’m worried I’m just sprinkling glitter on poo, is there any other suggestions?

Fence panels are relatively cheap - a 6 foot high once cost us about £40 recently.
Alternatively, some cheap trellis or, could you just remove it altogether.

offer to go halves on the cost and it will get done a lot more quickly

It will make a surprising difference to how it looks if you paint it.

You are supposed to ask to paint your side if it is not your fence. In reality people do this all of the time without mentioning it to the owners of the fence. As long as you do not slosh the paint on it should be fine and not leak through to the other side. You could always use the same colour as their side to be on the safe side.

I recommend Ducksback for the paint.

I personally wouldn’t bother painting a fence that is going to be scrapped in a year or so though. I value my time!

Do you want to install your own fence inside the boundary?

Plant a hedge your side. Green usually is more attractive.
