Grey bookcase

EatSprayGlove · 22/08/2021 15:14

This might not be the right area but I need a bookcase. We have Ikea Billy bookcases elsewhere which are perfect but they need to go in a bedroom which is blue and grey so Billy colours won't work. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Paint it?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/08/2021 15:56

Yes paint them, you may need a melamine-type primer first. We have painted IKEA bookcases (not Billy) and they are fine.

I think we used a F&B estate eggshell, the colour would have been any two word combination you can think of, e.g. Tassel Mold, Pillarbox Orifice, Sniggering Frog etc.

EatSprayGlove · 22/08/2021 16:50

I have some paint as we've had to paint other bits but my worry is that weird covering never seems to paint well! Clearly primer is the answer. Painting probably won't happen until next summer though and I was hoping to get something sorted sooner Blush

They do a Billy in grey with glass doors

Whaaaaattttt?! I will look online, we went to our nearest one and they didn't show grey as an option!

It’s definitely on the app

PeppermintMocha · 22/08/2021 22:11

they might be discontinuing them as I didn't see any in the store last time I was in, and I have a feeling they may have been a special edition, but they definitely existed, as I have three of them! Large Billy ones, with the Oxberg glass doors, in a light grey. They did special colours like a red and a beige etc. I think there was also blue, though, and might still be, so worth looking.

But otherwise, there are places like the cotswold company or whatever it's called, that often show grey bookcases with oak tops etc that I think look really nice.

I'd also try some of the dark blue ones as that can look really smart

I was about to be jawdropping at the idea of an Ikea all but have just discovered it on my phone!

they are on the app, but hard to find - when you look up normal Billy/Oxberg, it doesn't come up, only the normal (black, brown, white, etc) colours do. But if you search separately for Billy grey, you get another selection, where you have the new special colours for the moment, which seems to be a dark red, a turquoise blue (that acutally looks very dark teal) and a grey (apparently metallic grey, so not sure if it's the same one as mine, but possibly). The blue looks really nice, especially with the wood shelves.

EatSprayGlove · 22/08/2021 22:17

Dark blue would also work @PeppermintMocha so will look!

We were actually in store last night and saw a number of grey cabinets and bookcases in the display hall, we picked up a nice grey side table so it seems an of the moment colour for IKEA

I love the app, saves on trees

How strange, there was only one grey unit in ours and it was more of a kitchen thing. I have found the grey Billy online but can't get hold of it as they only have it in the Essex store :( we are going to go back next month and look at LOMMARP if I can't get hold of anything before then but I think it's more teal than blue. Just found something in the Range but I hate ordering without seeing them in real life!

They also do one called Havsta here

EatSprayGlove · 23/08/2021 08:27

Thanks Edith, we looked at this but in real life it looked very kitchen (although doesn't online now weirdly) and it's too deep for the space. Sadly not in our store when we went or now either but the colour is spot on.

If you go in via the app and just type Grey it brings up quite a few more, just woken up and my brains not great yet with names

PeppermintMocha · 23/08/2021 09:32

which is your local?

If you want the grey Billy and are even relatively close, it could be worth the trip, as you know exactly what you are getting, what size etc, and the Lakeside store is just off the motorway, so if you can get to eg. M25 somehow, then it's quite a short diversion off it. Close to M11 junction with M25 so if you are in the north/east somewhere and can get to M11, it might not take you that long.

EatSprayGlove · 23/08/2021 09:36

Annoyingly we lived near the essex one years ago but it's too far to travel now. I really would like to see it tbh as well rather than embarking on a 4 hour trip each way and needing a day off work. I think I'm going to go and have another look at Havsta next month and see if I can work out the room so we can manage the greater depth and some way of getting a back onto it as it's open which isn't ideal for a kids room.

Don't know where you are but there's a navy one on Ebay atm.

Guardsman18 · 23/08/2021 12:40

I bought a lovely one from Argos a few years ago. Also Cotswold Company sell good furniture although more expensive.

EatSprayGlove · 23/08/2021 16:31

Thank you I will look around as eBay genuinely didn't occur to me! I am hopeful that the grey fad is over and people are getting rid 🤞🏻 Cotswold do a perfect one I looked yesterday but it's more than I have to spend at the mo
