Is there a wardrobe equivalent of DIY kitchens/HKOC?

We have been trying to get a joiner to make some wardrobes for us for ages and they’re all so busy.

We are planning a new kitchen at the mo and it just occurred to me that surely planning and ordering a wardrobe online would be a lot easier than a kitchen and wondered if anywhere does them? The just get it fitted by a joiner. I think most joiners order in the carcass and doors anyway.

IKEA? Their PAX range includes everything you might need, and I think they can assist you with design etc. Then get your joiner to fit it. Unless you have a particularly odd/unique space.

SunnyUpNorth · 20/08/2021 12:23

I had thought of pax but wanted something a bit nicer quality, better choice if doors etc.

We got our kitchen doors from here:

kitchenandbedroomdoors.co.uk/kitchen_door_range.asp?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIi5Gk0b6_8gIVBPrICh1M4ARSEAAYASAAEgIEivD_BwE

Happy with quality and service

We got all the pull out baskets from here:

Noremax make bespoke doors for Pax wardrobes.

sparkypupp · 20/08/2021 12:34

I've seen some great hacks online using IKEA pax wardrobes to build custom wardrobes & adding things like panelling, different handles, painting to make them unique. I'm probably going to do it myself when I reach that stage.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 20/08/2021 13:14

I'm ordering the 4 x 100cm larder units from HMKOC. My joiner will fit them as wardrobes.

2 of them will have 3 internal drawers (and half hanging rail that I'll buy separately) and the others will have 1 top shelf (and full hanging rail that I'll buy separately).

I'm also using their units to make a fitted shelving unit for our tv snug and storage for our playroom.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 20/08/2021 13:16

Just to add it's not a cheap option, as they still need to be hand painted (haven't got a quote for that yet). If you search on Instagram, there will be lots of PAX hacks where people have added plinths and cornicing to the cheap IKEA units.

I called IKEA the other day about stock availability and I know the wardrobes carcass wasn't available for online order until September.

SunnyUpNorth · 20/08/2021 20:44

I have looked briefly at IKEA pax but I wasn’t sure how you fit them to get them flush to the wall with there being skirting boards. Can’t imagine we could get them as perfect as Instagram hacks!

I love IKEA but it does have a limited life I think before things get scruffy or bits break etc, wanted something a bit better quality.

I’ll check out hkoc, but it’s the same issue with skirtings.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 20/08/2021 21:34

@SunnyUpNorth you need to remove the skirting and refit it once the unit are fitted. Skirting isn't very expensive to buy by the length from a timber yard

We are looking at this at the moment - Shaker Doors/Foxstow do doors (and fillers/ end panels) for Pax frames, and I've found a company called Wardrobefy via Instagram (London ish though they seem to cover a wide area) who will customise Pax to fit your space. Not used them yet, but imagine a decent joiner would be able to do similar for you. How this works with custom doors I haven't quite figured out yet!

DrIrisFenby · 20/08/2021 21:45

Have you tried Jali? I think they do wardrobes now. You can basically design exactly what you want to the mm. Choose either painted or unfinished. They deliver to you and you put it together. We have had 2 bookcases from them - excellent quality, really sturdy and pretty straightforward to put together.

minipie · 20/08/2021 21:47

We got ikea Pax carcasses and inside fittings (drawers etc) and then got a joiner to make the doors, filler panels etc to make it flush with the floor and ceiling etc.

Qc16 · 20/08/2021 22:09

We’ve just had a new HMOC kitchen fitted and had our joiner fit a wall of fitted wardrobes. The wardrobes were fairly expensive so when we needed a couple of smaller wardrobes for alcoves. We ordered them from pineland.co.uk/services/ - (who mainly make kitchens) they make them to your dimensions and they come painted in any colour matched to the likes of F&B or LG. They are very reasonably priced and certainly cheaper the ones made by the joiner.
I can definitely recommend them - great customer service.

I came in to say Jali, but I see it's already men mentioned !

Africa2go · 21/08/2021 10:40

We have PAX carcasses and then had a joiner fit them (sloping ceiling) and add panels / plinth / header plinths and had custom doors built.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 21/08/2021 10:46

I think we got ours from here
www.wardrobedoorsdirect.co.uk

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 21/08/2021 10:47

However DH made the insides so whether that would be any use to you I don't know. Ours go wall to wall

SunnyUpNorth · 21/08/2021 19:00

Jali looks great but does seem quite pricey.

Pine land actually isn’t that far from me so I might try and pay them a visit. @Qc16 could you give me a ballpark for how much yours were and what sort of size please?

OP posts:
DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 21/08/2021 22:15

I lied. Ours came from here www.spaceslide.co.uk/sliding-wardrobe-doors

They're very good, clearly not as expensive as others but perfectly decent doors, especially if you want something reasonably simple as we did

Qc16 · 22/08/2021 00:14

@SunnyUpNorth - Pineland work in feet and inches - ours were 39in wide by 87in tall and cost £1670 for both painted. That includes delivery to London
They make everything to order so the best thing is to ring them for a quote or better still visit them.

SunnyUpNorth · 23/08/2021 14:25

Thanks @Qc16 I’ll def pop there when the kids have gone back to school.
