Council tax - can anyone explain?

Hello!

First time buyer here, no idea what I'm doing and would be grateful of any help.

I'm due to complete on the 15th of Sept.
I will be giving notice on my current rental at the end of September and moving out by the end of October. Council tax goes out on the 28th each month.

Given there will be an overlap, how will it work? I'm assuming I will have to pay for the new property as soon as I move in. Two payments in September and October (then stop paying for current rental after October's payment), is that right? I will give them a ring at some point to clarify any way, but just wanted to check and see if anyone on here knows how it works...

Expensive couple of months ahead 😱😆

Thank you 😊

Do you pay over 10 or 12 months? Council tax is front loaded if you pay over 10 months and you may find that you are up to date already.

Call them to let them know that you are moving, especially if you are still going to be with the same council. There is sometimes a discount for a property being empty and unfurnished.

I pay over 12 months so I'm assuming I will owe them money. The property won't be empty and it will be with a different council unfortunately.

I've just phoned the council now to ask and the lady explained that they won't know until I close the account down and they will then send me an estimate. Even when I explained I paid over 12 months and not 10 she couldn't give me a yes or no answer.

I hate things like this, I don't understand any of it!

Have you exchanged contracts yet OP?
If so would you be able to give notice by the end of August and then move out at the end of September?
You would be liable to pay council tax at the new property from 15th September, but there may be a slight delay in setting up the new account so it may be possible for the 2 weeks owing for September to be added onto a bill and paid later if that makes sense.
