Hi so I'm looking for some advice, I recently moved into a private rented property. The bedroom has a recurring bad smell, I thought it was of the last tenants so i bleached all the skirting boards and used the carpet cleaner , the smell completely went but then it started to return a couple a of weeks later so I vaxed again then it went, we have had bad rain and now the bedroom stinks again but it's worse I'm am literally sleeping on the sofa because its knocking me sick. There is no signs of damp on the walls so it must be coming from the floorboards or underneath, has anyone got any suggestions on what I can use to seal the floorboards with? Im wanting to get new carpets fitted but need to try and stop this smell coming through first

Thankyou for reading

Perhaps a dead rodent under the floorboards?

I’d be pulling up the floorboards to make sure there isn’t (a dead body) anything under them before sealing

I was also going to suggest, dead rodent under the floorboards. Possibly the previous tenants reported a rodent problem, then landlord put down poison and now youve got the stinky result.

Tbh whatever the problem is my first thing to do would be not to try endless ways of dealing with it but report it to the landlord.

Talk to the landlord or their agent about it. I would assume any investigation would be their responsibility. Especially since you've already tried cleaning.

How old is the building

What floor are you on

Are the floorboards like planks, or large sheets of chipboard

Has an extra bathroom been added nearby since it was built? Of is it an extension or addition?

Smelly after rain is probably leaking drains.

have you got vertical blinds? They can smell really bad

Talk to your landlord first, you’re not responsible for new carpets etc as a tenant anyway.

As others have said it’s quite likely to be a dead rodent under the floor boards, but get your landlord to sort it.

I'd have said dead mouse, but why would the smell temporarily go away after cleaning? It would go away eventually, though, although I don't know the timescale. Drains maybe?

You really need to speak to landlord or agent. Keep a record of communication.

The dead rodent smell wouldn't go and come back, it also does eventually dissipate once it's decomposed. Unless you have more than one and they are dying at different times.

It's a really revolting smell.
