How to style beam in knocked through room

We're knocking through two small rooms to make one large, dual aspect lounge. I know that's an unpopular choice on here, but it suits us better and I'm happy with the decision. The builders are in now, and the RSJ has just gone in, bisecting the middle of the room and it sits lower than I expected. Does anyone have any good ideas about how to decorate the beam so it isn't a horrible eyesore? It's a 1930s house so I don't think a farmhouse style beam would suit. TIA.
