hi all,

my partner gets regular work through his "boss" (put in quote marks because partner is technically self employed) and is normally paid on the 10th of every month. however, he has just been told that starting next month they are moving the pay date to the 16th instead.

this is a real problem for us because our rent is due on the 14th of every month so next month I will literally not have it because my salary will not cover the rent on it's own as well as all the other bills that come out before then.

can I request estate agent/landlord move the date we pay rent? would be by 3 days? so from the 14th to the 17th?

really panicking about this now.

You can ask. But they will need to add on the three extra days' rent.

Candydreamer · 12/08/2021 08:02

I would be okay with that, I really dont know what else I could do.

the only other option would be to tske out pay day loans and then pay them back immediately which is not really a path I want to go down but if they refused probably wouldnt have a choice.

As a landlord, I'd be absolutely happy for you to do this. No issue at all.

Some might have problems (eg if their mortgage is due right after the rent), but you'd hope they'd have a buffer.

Far, far better to ask than to take a payday loan.

Good luck!

If that's the path you're having to consider, I would use a credit card - are there any bills you could pay for on that this month, before the DD goes out and then repay it as soon as you get paid? Or put all your food shopping on it between now and then to free up some money?

BadgertheBodger · 12/08/2021 08:24

I’m sure it will be absolutely fine, just call them and explain pay day has been moved so you need to move rent day and arrange to pay the additional 3 days

HalloHello · 12/08/2021 08:35

You're probably better just ringing your landlord and asking rather than fretting madly about pay day loans etc. I would definitely not be using pay day loans either, for the sake of 3 days. Have you got a credit card?

Candydreamer · 12/08/2021 08:36

I was accepted for an over draft with my bank, I'm assuming as I would only ever dip into it for 2/3 days to cover rent this is unlikely to have a negative impact?

I have looked and it would cost me a pound if I ever have to dip into it, in comparison to a pay day loan which costs over 10 pound for the same amount of time...eek

Definitely speak to your landlord. I'd get in touch with them ASAP to avoid giving myself time to catastrophize!

I'm a landlord and my tenant recently had a very similar request and I didn't mind in the slightest. Fingers crossed yours will be fine with it.
