Can you lay stones/slate chippings on building sand??

We have been constructing a new patio area which will have a border of plum chippings or similar. The area for the border has a base of compacted hardcore and as there was building sand left over my DH just shoved that on top of the hardcore (rather than trying to dispose of it) and was planning on laying the chips/slate directly on top of the sand. I’m a bit worried about drainage with the sand on top of the hardcore. However it’s pretty clear from this post I’m as clueless as my DH about these sorts of things. Does anyone know whether this will be ok to chip over or do we need to dig the sand back out? I should add that the border of chips will not be walked on at all, it’s just decorative.

TIA

I wonder if this should have been posted in the gardening section?

I wouldn't worry about the drainage but you may find that some of the sand migrates to the surface and also that weeds may take root in sand.
