Vertical blinds or slat blinds?

Hi all,

Me again with my indecision. Everyone here is so helpful, I'm loving it!!

So my latested question - should I get vertical or slat (is that the name) blinds. Our house is looking modernish but also hoping for timeless and classic. Would vertical blinds meet that criteria or the slat style more appropriate?

By slat do you mean Venetian? I think vertical blinds look too much like an office. Wooden Venetian blinds can look lovely.

I would skip the blinds entirely and only have curtains.

Shutters

I think vertical blinds usually look like a reject from a 70s office block, unless you've got amazing bespoke ones.

So, slats, or Venetian, all the way.

Wooden or plastic slat blinds are the devils choice! 😈 They will forever be dusty no matter how often you clean them.

LongTimeMammaBear · 10/08/2021 02:45

Ooh not vertical. Always looks cheap and like an old 1980s office

Monty27 · 10/08/2021 02:45

Oh not vertical blinds OP they're for offices 😱

I agree vertical blinds are a no go, awful looking things.

Venetians can look ok but are a bastard to keep clean, especially if you get white.

In my next home I'll only go with roller blinds on the windows where I really need privacy or shade. You can get double rollers to do both, with a layer of sheer and one of blockout. Plus curtains in living/bedrooms to add softness and warmth.

I think it depends as much on the type of house and windows you are wanting to cover.
I’m going against the majority but in a modern built house, the windows can be huge panes of glass, potentially wall sized with dual use as access. Horizontal blinds can look strange as the large size makes the slats look weirdly tiny. Roller blinds take away all the advantage of the large panes of glass if you can only see out below waist level (even the partially see through ones as we also have one of those and you have to raise it to see properly). Whereas vertical you can have the best of both as they angle to block the sun but keep the view. We went with vertical on a few of ours that face south into the garden (so used only for sun shade not privacy) and they don’t look like an old office, unless the rest of your decor is of that vibe, you just have to do them right and fit in with the look of the room. If the house is modern and the decor fresh, it is doable.
I will admit I regret them in one room where I think they’re dreary, but it’s the kids gamesroom (they’re teens so too old for it still to be called a playroom) and they chose them with the rest of the decor, so as soon as the kids move out … so do those blinds 😂

Anything but vertical blinds!

PurpleSapphire · 10/08/2021 03:50

Venetians look nicer I think but are terrible to keep clean, awful fiddly things..even worse if you have cats who will find a way to wriggle around them and rub dirt across them.

RitaFires · 10/08/2021 07:59

I don't like the look of vertical, I have cream painted wood venetians in one of my bay windows and I think they look really classic and I'm really happy with them. While I was deciding what blinds to get I just had curtains but I checked out every house I passed that was the same style as mine and used what the neighbours had done as inspiration. Most neighbours have venetians but one had the thinner width which looked out of proportion with the relatively big window so I chose the 50mm slats.

It really depends on what you want and what makes sense for the room, blackouts are better for bedrooms and I like the kind that let light through but don't let people look in for the hallway and landing.

Vertical = office

I have horizontal blinds - off white wood with wide slats (not as many slats to clean🤣). I prefer them to curtains as our house is small and curtains can make rooms appear smaller, plus we have a east/west facing house so need blinds to cut out some sunlight throughout the day. Roller blinds or curtains would cut out both the sunlight and the views

Runkle · 10/08/2021 08:10

I really don't like vertical blinds. Seen them in many different houses and dislike them every time.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 10/08/2021 11:42

Vertical blinds are really ugly, I hate them in offices let alone a home, there is nothing more unstylish than a vertical slatted blind.

lobsterkiller · 10/08/2021 15:29

I moved in November and all of the rooms have vertical blinds, I do not find them nice at all but they'll do until I get the work done on the house. I prefer blinds, either roller, roman or venetian.

Webbedlife · 11/08/2021 11:59

Not vertical - horrible things. Venetians are ok but can be a pain to clean. You could also consider day/night blinds.

You could always try Cedar Blinds Ltd. They make wonderful blinds and come to measure and fit them for no extra cost to you. I've had all my blinds from them and I love them all!!
