Hi,

We’ve recently bought a house that needs A LOT of work. Upstairs there are two fires, that have been bricked up. I’ve managed to get most of the bricks out but it looks like the cast iron fire back? Has been sawn off. So there is just a bare chimney.
My question is how do I repair this? Do I need a whole new insert or do is there a way to replace the back and it been welded together?
Sorry if these are ridiculous questions, this is our first renovation and I have no idea what I’m doing 😂
Will upload pictures!

Is it the whole cast iron insert that’s missing or just the firebrick?

I’m unsure of what it’s actually called 😂

That looks to me as though it's just missing the grate at the front. Do you have neighbours with similar houses as one of them may have the original bedroom fires? Or look at sold prices on the same street for photos showing the bedroom fires.

This is the other fire + a close up of where it looks like the back has been cut off

I still have a few bricks that need removing from the centre of the fire.
Many of the other house don’t have this type of fire and have log burners. Our neighbours house are all newish so we don’t have anything to compare it to.

You could email www.vicfires.com/41_fireback/ for advice.

You're definitely missing the grate.

You need a new fire brick which goes at the back of the fireplace and covers those bricks. You also need a replacement fire basket. Although it might be easier to replace the whole insert but keep the lovely surround. Don’t remove the bricks that are already there though! Like a PP suggests vic fires are good.
