Walton on Thames

Hi all, thinking about buying a property in Walton on Thames or around that area. But am a bit worried about flooding. I know areas near the Thames and the Walton shopping centre are prone to flooding. What about areas further to the south or south of the Walton station. Is it better down there? Thanks in advance!

I don’t know if instances where Walton town centre have flooded. Just the areas along the banks and not to homes as the Walton side is much higher. Along the river walk only, yes. Mainly it’s the other side of the river that floods to homes. I have lived in the area 30 years,

You will find other areas of town are classified as being at risk of floods, but this is due to proximity to the reservoirs - as if they burst then there would be quite a large flood! The likelihood of this is extremely low obviously.

Blair…. Thank you for your reply! Would like to know more, if I may, regarding the train service into central London. Would I be correct to say it is almost impossible to get a seat from Walton on Thames station to central London during rush hour? Lastly, is Walton still a good place to bring up a young family? Looking forward to some local insights! Thank you in advance

No problems with getting a seat on the train at rush hour. The commuters have massively reduced since the start of the pandemic. Even before the pandemic, you would get a seat most days but the train would be full once it left WoT. About once every 6-8 weeks you would have to stand. But I doubt that’d be the case anymore

Really great area for families. So much to do- there’s playgroups on most days in various places, a few play cafes, dozens of parks including splash parks. Proximity to farms, days out, big soft play etc is very good too.

Hi Redcart, so getting a seat at Hersham station in the morning pre-pandemic would be difficult?
The property is nearer to Hersham!

Hi @DC88! You would get a seat at Hersham, but most of the trains are slower than from Walton. There are a couple of "faster" (25 min) trains in the morning around 8am. (Disclaimer - I haven't travelled to London at this time of day since before Covid, so do check the train timetables)

Now wondering what property you are looking at, as an avid Rightmove checker

Hello all, just jumping on this thread as I am also thinking of buying a house in Walton. The property we have fallen in love with is on Sidney road, it is apparently at risk of surface water flooding, have any of you witnessed flooding in this area? Apparently it's not due to the reservoir and more to do with heavy rain/flash floods and lack of surface drainage. Also I was wondering if it is a safe/good part of Walton. I see it is near a huge estate - St Johns Drive, I don't want to sound snobby as we currently live right next to an estate in Finchley and have lots of friends there. I just wondered if St Johns Drive was anything to worry about? I would really appreciate advice we have a 3 year old so want to make the right decision for him.

Hi @Wopper1, just saw this thread in my threads im on :) I do recall seeing something about flooding around that area in the last few months on facebook... I'm not on FB any more so can't check now, but perhaps you could try and join the local group and have a search for posts about floods? The group is just called Walton-on-Thames and Hersham.

Sidney Road is a nice road I think, but again you could have a search in the FB group for any recent mentions of crime etc? Again I do recall one incident a few months ago. A helicopter came out and landed in St John's as someone was apparently running around with a gun but that was very out of the ordinary to be honest.

(Why did I delete FB, I am obviously missing out on so much now )

The flooding is exactly what I was worried about. I hope Hersham or south/south east of Walton station is clear of flooding.
