Harpenden or St. Albans?

Hi everyone. My partner has recently found work in Harpenden, and we are looking into moving to the area from Cambridge. How is it living in Harpenden or St. Albans, and which do you prefer?

First thing we're noticing is the painfully high cost to buy (same here in Cambs, where we have been renting as impossible to break onto the property ladder without tech or city salary).

Neither of us drive (although this may change) so we're looking to find somewhere to live which is commutable for him to Harpenden on public transport. I am WFH for the foreseeable future (except going to the office in Cambs once or twice a month) so am hoping to find a nice place to live where I can walk the dog at lunch and possibly have some nice independents around.

We're also weary knowing Herts is quite a conservative area, and we're... not. If you have any suggestions for places to look around that'd be a huge help. Any advice would be much appreciated x

I am also from Cambridge. If I am not mistaken, Harpenden is on the Thameslink which has good connections in and out of Ldn, and probably cheaper than St Albans, so I would go for Harpenden.

St Albans is a small city, Harpenden has a much quieter vibe. Which do you prefer? If you haven't yet I suggest spending a Saturday afternoon in each.

I'm in St Albans and love it.
