Moving to Wythenshawe M23 (South Manchester)

Hi, may I get some advice about moving to Wythenshawe? Which area would be better? Which area should be avoided?

OP posts:
Witheringlooks · 05/08/2021 11:58

I wouldn't live in eccles it looks pretty on those photo's but in reality it's like Wythenshawe. I've heard racist abuse there and it is rough. There are also not that many amenities unless you want to go into the town centre which is tiny. It's only saving grace is it's near media city if culture is your thing but even then the shops all shut at 6pm!

irritableshark · 05/08/2021 12:19

Yes to Prestwich. Definitely. Also Whitefield, monton and worsely.

I don't know north Manchester that well but prestwich is like the Didsbury of north manc.

MrsYip · 05/08/2021 12:20

@notangelinajolie Thanks for reconfirming these two places are ok! the only issue perhaps is they're far away from metro and I have to rely on bus

Any concerns on mews property ?

OP posts:
MrsYip · 05/08/2021 12:27

On Prestwich, any area within there I should avoid?

OP posts:
gwilt · 05/08/2021 12:28

Agree with @irritableshark about Whitefield too (next to Prestwich).

You have Whitefield and Beses o'th' Barn Metrolink stations to choose from in the Whitefield area.

Do be aware that there are areas which are predominantly Jewish in parts of Prestwich and Whitefield, so that may or may not affect where you want to look. This is not intended to offend anyone. I am Jewish.

Prestwich used to be a pretty standard Manchester suburb, but has developed to have nice restaurants/shops over recent years and has a bit more of a villagey feel. It's a bit closer to Manchester, so maybe a better choice.

contentedcake · 05/08/2021 13:26

Ooooh I'm in the same position!
Lived in wythenshawe for 18 years, been in London for 10. Debating moving back as lots of fancy new builds are being built there.

Pro is definitely close to the airport and it has a community feel, however it's trying to become a "up@coming" area.
If it succeeds it be a great investment.

Cons - lots of drugs/mental health issues, I left for a reason, all my family live there but it was depressing, racist, but according to my mum that is slowly changing. However I'm still part of the wythy group on Facebook and I see a lot of racism on the group l.

Schools are garbage. All I see is negativity about the schools/bullying.

A lot of the parents are not actively raising their children so your children will be going school with kids who think saying "paki" is cool and with no table manners.

The good lot send their kids to outer boroughs schools

I'm going back to Manchester and will look at northernden/sale/ and north Manchester :)

I wouldn’t live in Whythenshawe if you paid me and you’re going to struggle to find anywhere decent with your budget in south Manchester. Could you consider a two bed flat rather than a house, at least to start with?

I wouldn’t go too far out if you find somewhere with no tram stop and have to rely in buses as peak time traffic is hideous. Have you thought about Droylsden? It’s an OK part of east Manchester with a tram stop with plenty of 3 bedroom houses in your budget.

anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 05/08/2021 14:00

I second Droylsden. It has its poor areas but you'd easily find that type of house for within your budget.

It's definitely an "up and coming" area thanks to the metro link and house prices are only going up.

Thanks! I have also considered 2 bed flat in a good location to start with. A bit worried about the resale value though since most people prefer houses to flats. I also understand the potential issues with buying flats like service charges, etc.

Are there any experience in buying/owning flats? Things that I should pay attention to?

I will also explore more about Droylsden.

@contentedcake Why did you ever leave the place ;)

Relationship!

Funny enough I like wythenshawe and I feel comfortable there because my family live ther e (nice people of wythenshawe) and I grew up there but there is lots of negatives and I think if you didn't grow up there it be hard! For me it be fine, and I've even considered the new builds in wood house park because they look amazing and near my family !

MirandaMarple · 05/08/2021 16:54

I moved from Cheadle Hulme to near Ramsbottom. SO much more for your money and there's some lovely villages (Tottington, Greenmount, Holcombe)

But as others have said it's not as well connected for the tram. It's a bus ride to Bury for the tram.

Thinking about your budget what about Audenshaw, Dukinfield, Stalybridge, Hyde? All have some nice bits!

MirandaMarple · 05/08/2021 16:55

Prestwich is a no with your budget.

Just saw a new house available in Sale East. How is that part of Sale?Price a bit stretch for us though.

Northernden is over priced for what you get.
Sale moor or Northern moor are cheaper options and both near Metro.

Sale Moor would be M33 so in Trafford and thereford in catchment for the Grammar schools. Northern Moor is Manchester M23 and not Grammar catchment.

My friend has just moved to Prestwich and it's also up and coming and has lots of great shops and affordable houses.

Those Timperley houses are in what used to be called the Broomwood estate and was primarily council housing. I suspect that has changed in more recent years. There's a reason you can buy a 3 bed house in Timperley for £200k though! I wouldn't want to live there and be reliant on public transport to commute into Manchester. You'd need to drive or get the bus to the Metrolink and buses are pretty terrible in that area.
If you want an easy commute in a nicer area I would seriously consider the flats around Sale and Brooklands.

or right in Urmston "village" a stone's throw from the station

Even Stretford near the Metrolink and town centre is a better location than the far corner of the Broomwood:

I don't think it's too bad round this end of Northern Moor

Thanks. The one I just show is also within Trafford & the Grammar catchment since it's in Sale Moor M33, so should be quite popular, I believe?

I have also noticed the third one on your list. It is good but just far away from Metro so I have to rely on bus

Have you looked at Mossley? Village feel, near to countryside. Cheap housing, outstanding schools. 20 mins on train to Manchester

Thanks! Agree. Easy commuting is very important. I can't rely on bus and have to take out those remote area.

yes, will keep the apartment option open. Thanks for the suggestion. Will take a detailed look on them.

@Mrsyip I will try to PM you. I'm in Wythenshawe and love it. Property is much cheaper than the fancy bits and there's a great sense of community here. I moved here 15 years ago.

Wyth is great. Lots of trees, and the best, tightest, most there for each other community I've ever come across. Newall Green would be where I'd look.

chipshopElvis · 05/08/2021 17:59

Oh it won't let me DM. Look at Northern Moor towards the Sale border and don't listen to all the Wythenshwe nay sayers!

chipshopElvis · 05/08/2021 18:03

Oh and you might want to avoid the Racecourse estate in Sale it has a bad rep.
