'inherited' kitchen from previous owners.
the top cupboards have garage doors, but they don't stay open.

anyone know how to fix it?

Are they supposed to?

That might be a really stupid question. The only time I’ve seen these was in my old rental flat, they had them put in with the new kitchen but they were self closing so didn’t stay open if you weren’t holding it.

I think they should stay open when you push them all the way up.
or at least they shouls stay open long enough to take a bowl outor put ig in with both hands.

I've got one that does and one that doesn't in a similarly inherited kitchen. I think it's just wear. But it means I don't trust the one that does!

Are they a piston type stay? Can you hear air being pushed when opening or closing?

On the cupboard part the plastic cover may come off so you can see the mechanism and if there’s any adjustment.

I would have thought they should stay open, so possibly malfunctioning through wear and tear?

We have one like that with a piston. It needed replacing and cost about £5 from screw fix.

purplesequins · 31/07/2021 16:45

no pistons, just flat metal ellbows (top)

We had some similar, not in a kitchen, and you had to open them right up and beyond if you see what I mean and then bring them back level and they would then kind of click and stay open, to close you had to push them up again to unclick. After a while whatever it was that clicked wore down and they stopped working properly.

I would look on eBay for some similar hinges, usually the best place for that sort of thing if Screwfix don't sell them.

There may be a piston or a friction screw inside the black cover (if it will come off)
