Any value in engaging a Quantity Surveyor?

We're due to start our building works shortly. Has anyone used a Quantity Surveyor?

BIL used one a couple of years ago and now DH thinks we need one too. Not sure how much a QS would charge, but I'd rather spend the money elsewhere 😆

Thoughts please?

Yes, do it. This is extremely sensible and often a QS will more than pay for themselves.

I have worked in property development and too many people think they can cut costs by not doing things properly, only to cost themselves a lot more money and hassle. A QS should really help to avoid that trouble.

Is this a thing? I did the costs for my build and it was fine.

It depends how big the job is. A good QS will save you an absolute fortune and often will deal with the absolute shit that builders can throw at you. Especially regarding things magically costing 50% more than they quoted for or taking 16 weeks longer than they said it would.

Get get a good builder who is recommended from personal experience , not from FB
