quote for bathroom...no idea on price anymore

I'm rather fed up.
I booked 4 months ago to have my slightly larger than average sized bathroom refitted by wickes.
It should have been started last week.
48 hours before work was due to start they phoned and told me that not only were some of the items not available bit neither were the fitters!
So...told them to stuff it and got my deposit back.
Cost: £6.5k
I approached a local firm whose work I've seen on other homes and their quote came in today.
They have a window in 8 weeks, otherwise it'll be December.
I've altered the design slightly and added a new door and moving some electrics.
Also taking the bath out and putting a shower cubicle in. Moving the toilet and the usual things like tiling, flooring etc
I know Wickes and B&Q and the like are the cheaper end of the scale but the local quote has come in at £11k.
Is that reasonable? £6.5k of that is labour?
I guess as long as they are reliable, turn up and do a good job that would be a start!
Anyone had anything similar recently?

I know that prices have shot up, materials and labour are in high demand and scarce, so I expect you are paying a premium for that. We are waiting it out but might prices might stay high!

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:01

Yeah I know that plaster has gone up hugely

TiddleTaddleTat · 16/07/2021 19:04

Sounds huge tbh. We have a mid sized bathroom and labour was £2.5k, although we didn't move the toilet or change position of the bath.

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:08

So it's pretty much a total change really (except for the window!)
Moving toilet, radiator, larger than average shower enclosure (it's an elongated offset if that makes sense)
Half plastered, half tile
Non slip flooring

OP posts:
Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:09

The radiator is also larger than current one

£6.5k is way too much for the work you want done.

I'd say the fittings I've chosen are mid range but not luxury.
Enclosure is larger than average.
There will be a lot of work before work can start iyswim? Basically got to rip the whole lot out.
The plastering alone is £1k (this is pretty standard around here ATM - I was quoted £800 for a tiny wc!)
We were hoping to do the wc too but no way at these prices!

i think prices are over inflated at the moment. Wait if you can. We want 2 bathrooms refitted but I'm not even considering it until shortages of materials and labour settle down.

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:32

Oh, and new lighting, Extractor fan, the usual gubbins

OP posts:
Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:32

@MissyB1 I hear you
But my bathroom is SO manky and I've put up work it for 10 years :(

OP posts:
Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:35

Whenever I've had work done in the past (here and the old house..) and labour always seems to cost more than the actual fittings/appliances...?

We moved rads, had expensive fittings (all grohe duravit and crosswater) and porcelain tiles around bath, on floor and half way up walls. Sockets moved and new lights. Big room (size of small double bedroom) cost us 11k 4 years ago so unless you are going very high spec I’d say that’s a lot. We paid about 3k for labour and most of that tiling

Piccalily19 · 16/07/2021 19:37

Last year we had 1 bathroom, 1 en-suite and a new sink/loo downstairs.
All average modern house size rooms, we went for the cheaper Victoria plum fittings but not the cheapest.
Both bathrooms needed plaster. Main bathroom was like for like switch otherwise. En-suite needed a wall moving, another new wall add on to enable switch from bath to shower and pipes moving for the shower/toilet.
Think it cost around 5k in labour? We purchased the bath fittings and that 5k included materials they purchased for the walls/plaster/fiddly pipes etc
I’d maybe get another quote from another local company?

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:38

Hmmmm

I used Wickes they did an awesome job. I’d have stuck and found new dates. Sorry op.

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:40

They couldn't give me new dates and wa redne to take delivery of the stuff!

OP posts:
Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:40

wanted me

OP posts:
Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:42

I found wickes dreadful.
The person I spoke to the store was so rude and after telling me that some of items I'd ordered 4 months previously weren't available told me to buy them from somewhere else!
Good job I didn't as I'd have been stuck with them.
My house really isn't large enough to act as a plumbers merchants 😀

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:42

Glad they did a good job for you though

OP posts:
Puffalicious · 16/07/2021 19:43

I really think you're being robbed alive. The original 6.5k sounds about right due to change of layout and increase in demand and prices. 11k is ridiculous. You'd be a fool to pay that.

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:44

Hmmm

OP posts:
ItsSnowJokes · 16/07/2021 19:44

To move things like toilets and baths etc... always costs more due to the waste.

We have just had our bathroom done and it cost just under 6k in total. We supplied all fixtures and fittings and shopped around for those. Labour bill was £3625 including replastering the ceiling and then an electrician cost £375 to include 4 new spots, extractor fan installed and wiring for an led mirror (we supplied mirror and fan and he supplied the spots).

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:44

My dh agrees with you:)

OP posts:
Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:46

The current bathroom was fitted by the previous owners
Least said the better tbh
There will be a lot of rubbish work to remedy I'm sure
