quote for bathroom...no idea on price anymore

I'm rather fed up.
I booked 4 months ago to have my slightly larger than average sized bathroom refitted by wickes.
It should have been started last week.
48 hours before work was due to start they phoned and told me that not only were some of the items not available bit neither were the fitters!
So...told them to stuff it and got my deposit back.
Cost: £6.5k
I approached a local firm whose work I've seen on other homes and their quote came in today.
They have a window in 8 weeks, otherwise it'll be December.
I've altered the design slightly and added a new door and moving some electrics.
Also taking the bath out and putting a shower cubicle in. Moving the toilet and the usual things like tiling, flooring etc
I know Wickes and B&Q and the like are the cheaper end of the scale but the local quote has come in at £11k.
Is that reasonable? £6.5k of that is labour?
I guess as long as they are reliable, turn up and do a good job that would be a start!
Anyone had anything similar recently?

Ok but you’re paying five grand more for the privalege op.

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:46

I'm even having the new door hung the opposite way 🙃

Gosh I think I've had very reasonable plumbers/tilers! I swapped a kitchen and bathroom - had to redo all drains etc, and I think the labour was £5000 for both! Pre covid, though it's the materials that have gone up alot and labour not so much (though not the actual sanitary ware or tiles as far as I can see).
I'm about to get a shower room redesigned as a bathroom and I thought £5k would be enough in SW London (I source all materials bar grout and adhesive type things). Guess I'm in for a shock.

@Mrs08

The current bathroom was fitted by the previous owners Least said the better tbh There will be a lot of rubbish work to remedy I'm sure
That's why skilled labour isn't cheap though, isn't it?
m0therofdragons · 16/07/2021 21:42

Our en-suite is quoted as 3500 for labour and will be about £5,500 in total. We’re using an independent plumber and he was 500 more than wickes but we’ve used him before.

HforHotel · 16/07/2021 21:47

Here's a recent quote I've received. Bathroom is fairly large. We've got 3 bathrooms to do. Even the smallest bathroom is £10k plus VAT (not including tiles or sanitary ware) 🤦🏼‍♀️

Master Ensuite
Remove existing tiles, flooring and all sanitary ware
Run 1st fix plumbing
Relay floor with marine ply
Make good walls
Supply and fit half height wood panelling
Tile floor and shower area
2nd fix plumbing
Install shower tray, cubicle, mixer, towel rail and radiators, basin, bath and WC
£12159.15 + vat
Tiles, sanitary ware and decorating are not included in this price

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 21:48

Absolutely!

That's interesting @HforHotel thank you so much for posting that.

I'm torn between thinking "ok, there's loads to do, potential issues from poorly installed current bathroom, decent bathroom furniture, complete rejig of current set up..."
To thinking "£11k!!!...what!!??"
😫😀

Our price includes everything, vat etc

The usual rule of thumb is to get 3 quotes. But do not tell any of them how much the other has quoted so you get a true price off them. (Else you may get an obviously lower one so you will pick them, or a similar to the 11k as they will know you were willing to pay it).

Puffalicious · 16/07/2021 22:03

My DH is a master plumber and thinks your labour quote is waaaaaay too high.

For comparison, a colleague of my exH stays in a very nice area: sandstone house, sports car in the drive (neighbour's) and she was quoted £20k by the initial company and £15K by the 2nd. She did some research, ordered all materials herself and sourced labour separately and just completed for about £9k. I know it's a garden but the concept is the same: sometimes they read a customer and quote accordingly. Get LOTS of quotes.

Puffalicious · 16/07/2021 22:04

Sorry, * quoted £20K for a garden redesign.

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 22:06

Thank you @Puffalicious

Small bathroom, london, last autumn, labour was 5.7k, had several quotes all around the same or more

Hadjab · 16/07/2021 22:18

I’ve been quoted £6.5k, plus VAT. This is to knock through the wall between the toilet and bathroom, move the bath, add a shower cubicle, build storage, tiling, etc, but the builder basically gave me a decent price because we’re also using them to build a kitchen extension.

Snoken · 16/07/2021 22:28

We did a large bathroom in December last year and did similar changes to yours. The total cost was 13K, 7K was labour. We went to the middle priced one as he seemed the most knowledgeable.

Snoken · 16/07/2021 22:29

Although, I should add that we had an old quote for that same bathroom from about 5 years ago, and back then it was 35% cheaper. At the time we thought it was too much and decided to wait a bit. Stupid, I know.

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 22:41

I think prices gave certainly risen @Snoken

Bloody hell that's expensive. I had my shower room done (fair enough, not a large bathroom, but had new shower, toilet, sink, cupboards, flooring, tiling, lighting etc, all for £4500

Redbrook · 16/07/2021 23:38

We had the en suite done last week. Paid about £2.2k for fittings (shower and tray, basin, toilet, floor & wall tiles, radiator, plastic ceiling & spotlights, all from local independent supplier) and another £2k for labour. He’d already done bathrooms for several neighbours so we knew he was good. Took 4 days.
The room is tiny. We’re just outside Manchester. We had three quotes for labour and they were all fairly similar.

BoredZelda · 16/07/2021 23:41

6.5k is way too much for the work you want done.

No it isn’t.

Yeah I know that plaster has gone up hugely

Everything has gone up hugely. 40% increase in timber prices, anything made of metal has increased by a similar amount. So that’s all your pipe work and fittings - even screws are hard to come by. Ceramics (tiles/WCs/basins) are 25% higher, plasterboard too.

It is a massive problem in the industry ad smaller contractors are at the end of the queue for sourcing materials.

Prices will stabilise as projects are pulled and supply gets better but they are unlikely to return to previous levels unless we get a recession.

It is impossible to say without looking at all the detail of the 11k is overblown, but we are seeing increases of up to 30% on smaller projects at the moment. Your best option is to shop around and get other quotes, although that will be difficult to do in the current market.

TokenGinger · 16/07/2021 23:55

I'm in the North West. My friend has just had her bathroom done, which is a fairly decent size. Everything ripped out, including old boiler cupboard, and mid-range bath, sink, toilet, shower, tiled top to bottom, spotlights added, new radiator. Cost was £6k.

cantrememberagain · 17/07/2021 00:10

Blimey, buy the items online and pay a local handy man those prices are absolutely bonkers..

CustardyCreams · 17/07/2021 03:58

Hi,
Just had a quote for a bathroom refit in a doer-upper, very well reputed local plumber. The bathroom is about 3m x3m. The quote below includes all labour and incidentals like pipes, grout etc but none of the fittings (so cost of tiles, shower, new sink, new loo, new heated towel rail, lights, extractor etc).

Rip out bathroom completely
Remove old bath, Basin , toilet , flooring , tiles and any other pipework no longer needed.
Fit new walk in shower tray in corner.
Fit a new aqualisa digital processing shower.
Tile around shower
Run new pipework.
Moving toilet over into the corner
Move basin around the other side of wall
Move towel radiator to other wall
Remove old ceiling lights and fit new ceiling lights and ceiling fan light. To fit new double switch for lights on the other side of the wall.
To repair walls and ceilings ready for painting.
Re ply floor and fit new vinyl click flooring.
Remove all rubbish from site.
