We're looking to relocate to the UK after many years overseas. We have previously lived in London (pre-kids) but don't want to move back there, for a number of reasons.

We've looked into a number of 'commuter towns' but without wanting to offend anyone who lives in some of these places, we've found most of them to be fairly uninspiring. We currently live in a city and we're used to having amenities/activities/nature on our doorstep.

We're looking for somewhere with some kind of 'buzz' to it. Somewhere with easy access to the countryside/coast. Somewhere with a lovely town centre, interesting, historic buildings, and a low-ish crime rate. Basically Edinburgh or Bath, I suppose, but we can't move to either (Edinburgh too far from family, Bath too long of a commute). Our eldest DC is a tween and youngest is 4 so we need good primary and secondary schools, and enough activities to keep the kids occupied through reception-teenage years.

We've spent some time in St Albans (quite liked it but the central areas are not in the good school catchment zones), still considering Winchester but there are no private day school options for boys, and we're going to look at Tunbridge Wells (it ticks some boxes but we've heard mixed things about living there). Brighton is out. We like Windsor but DH is very noise sensitive so anywhere with that much flight noise won't work. We might have a look at Cambridge, too.

We're leaving somewhere with a perfect climate and lots of activities and to make the repatriation successful we need to find somewhere where we will all be happy. I know it sounds as though we're super fussy but the last thing I want is to move and then, after the trauma of a major international move, have to uproot them again because we chose the 'wrong' place.

We're here for a few more days and this will be our last chance to recce before the repatriation in a few months' time. Is there anywhere else we should consider?

Stratford upon Avon would be perfect for you. It's a lovely market town with plenty to do and nature on your doorstep. Loads of history and outstanding schools (state and private).

South Warwickshire as a whole is pretty good. There's also Leamington Spa and Warwick, two separate towns but physically joined at the hip. Leamington is Regency/Victorian, Warwick is Medieval. They're about twenty minutes drive from Stratford. Leamington to Marylebone is about 1hr20. All have good schools.
BindTheWobbinUp · 13/07/2021 01:46

Cambridge, Stamford or Oundle would be my suggestions. The second two may be too rural but the commute into London isn't too bad.

Tavannach · 13/07/2021 02:08

Brighton?

RedRec · 13/07/2021 02:26

Guildford or Norwich.

cestunestilo · 13/07/2021 05:33

Canterbury, Tunbridge Well or Hern bay in Kent are all good for sea and city links.

Brighton has buzz.

Bournemouth is a bit tired.

Poundbury in Dorset could be good.

Exeter has a different kind of buzz.

York has a good vibe as does lots of Cotswold type places.

You need kirsty and phill on your case!

garlictwist · 13/07/2021 05:40

I visited Bristol a few weeks ago and thought it was really cool. It has a lovely feel to it.

laline1 · 13/07/2021 11:11

I’d also recommend Oxford - the commutes to London or Birmingham are about 1hour, it’s definitely historic and there are some very good schools, especially private day schools (e.g. Dragon, Summer Fields and Magdalen College School, but there are others). There are also museums, galleries, music and theatres, a botanic garden, lectures through the university, an open-air lido and more sport than anyone reasonably has time for. For children, as well as all the stuff I’ve already listed, there are things like sailing lessons on the Thames and the Story Museum. It’s easy to escape out to the Cotswolds, but there are huge open spaces within the City itself. I’m aware I’m coming across like a tour guide/ estate agent now….!!

ScaryHairyMcClary · 13/07/2021 11:22

It doesn’t really exist tbh - London sucks the life out of all the other towns nearby. Southbourne in Bournemouth is very buzzy these days with proximity to great countryside and obviously coast, but no good if you have a daily commute to London. Tunbridge Wells is lovely too but it’s not a major town like Edinburgh and the commute is still quite long. Norwich also brilliant but it’s a couple of hours to London on the train.

Would you consider Truro / Edinburgh and rent somewhere in London during the week to cover whatever days you need to be in the office?

I do know people who do the Edinburgh - London commute daily for 2 or 3 days per week, through work. They have family or part time nannies to help with the kids those days & by and large have a far better quality of life than if they were in and around London. So maybe the commuter in your family just needs to bite the bullet and accept a hideous commute in exchange for quality of life.

Honeyroar · 13/07/2021 12:10

Somewhere like Stamford in Lincs/Leics (I can never remember which!)

RedBonnet · 13/07/2021 12:36

I'm confused about Bath and Edinburgh - Bath is 'too long a commute' (to where?) but Edinburgh is hundreds of miles from Bath.

Anyway, my suggestions would be Cambridge or somewhere in Northumberland.

Or Newcastle - not considered 'smart' by many people but it is a student city so very vibrant. At over 900 years old it has a lot of history. Only 10 miles from the sea with excellent public transport. An hour and a half drive to the Lakes or less to Scotland. Hadrian's Wall, Holy Island, many many castles, and dark skies at Kielder.

Some excellent private schools.

Health-wise you have the top head injuries hospital, the top heart hospital and plenty more.

And everything is so much cheaper.

Heronwatcher · 13/07/2021 13:06

Honestly, no, it doesn’t exist. Bath, Edinburgh etc have a sort of mini London feel precisely because they are decently far from London. Some of the places mentioned like Hitchin etc have elements of London but they also have a lot of compromises. I think you’d be better working out your essentials vs nice to have. Would you rather have a buzzy, beautiful town with a longer commute, or somewhere more convenient but you still have to go into London for some cultural activities? And perhaps rent for a while?

Heronwatcher · 13/07/2021 13:11

And don’t worry too much, all of the places mentioned will have thousands of happy people so really it’s about working out what’s important to you. In addition to the places mentioned you could consider Haslemere (Surrey), Berkhamsted, Folkestone and Norwich but they are all very different (loads of comment online).

DecentPleasant · 13/07/2021 13:13

Move to a different bit of St Albans.

overnightangel · 13/07/2021 13:16

Depends where you’re commuting to, you’ve said possibly Edinburgh or Bath so 🥴

NautaOcts · 13/07/2021 13:16

Petersfield ticks most of your boxes…
Not sure on the ‘buzz’ bit but it is far enough out of London not to be just a commuter town/dormitory town but a place in its own right, but it still just an hour to Waterloo.
Half an hour from Winchester, Chichester, Guildford and Portsmouth.

Just don’t expect ubers or JustEat/Deliveroo

Southsea also nice but has some rough bits/next to rough bits of Portsmouth

NautaOcts · 13/07/2021 13:17

Particularly good for schools - good state options and a good range of private day schools

Iwantcauliflowercheese · 13/07/2021 13:23

You've described Canterbury in your original post. It ticks all your boxes. Excellent schools, lots of history and fast train to London.

BikeRunSki · 13/07/2021 13:38

I eas going to say York, but the op seems to imply a commute to London. If I have misunderstood that, then York. If I havn’t, and it’s not a daily commute, then York. Direct trains are only about 2 hrs but could be pricey daily.

Also Newcastle if London is not in the mix at all

clairethewitch70 · 13/07/2021 13:41

Cardiff if you can live anywhere and not commuting

raspberrymuffin · 13/07/2021 13:50

Like other posters have said, London tends to hoover up interesting cultural stuff - you need to be far away enough away that people can't just make a quick trip into London. I think Shrewsbury might tick a lot of your boxes, if you don't need to commute to London daily.

Londontown12 · 13/07/2021 13:54

Agree with above poster !! Oundle is lovely !! So is Stamford but very very busy traffic can be a pain !! Private school in oundle uppinham x

Scutterbug · 13/07/2021 13:56

I live in Stratford upon Avon and would think it might tick all your boxes.

Warmduscher · 13/07/2021 13:58

I think it depends what you mean by “uninspiring” and “buzz” really.
