Brown 80s windows

We've just moved into a late 80s build house. The windows are wooden sash, double glazed, stained dark brown.

The outside is very ugly, but aside from the fact I can paint them, I'm not that fussed on what the outside looks like.

Inside...I don't hate them (they are clearly well made and I like the sash style) but I can't visualise if they'd be better white, or any other clever colour ideas?

I'd especially appreciate before/ after photos if anyone has anything similar.

Thanks

Our windows are a similar colour, and I've gradually been repainting them. My colour of choice is a Dulux tonal shade called Bleached Lichen and I use the second palest tone of the card. It's very neutral, but the effect is lighter than the dark wood, without being PBW.
