FTB - When do I need to buy buildings insurance?

I’m a FTB and just received the Mortgage Deed from my solicitor. They need information about what buildings insurance I have in place. We haven’t exchanged contracts yet and don’t expect that to happen until August at the earliest. So when do I need to buy home insurance since I don’t know when I’ll actually be living in my new home? My
mortgage broker tried to get me to sign up for home insurance but the quote was £650 plus and I thought that seemed very expensive. I’ve since got several quotes for around £150 which seems more reasonable. Is it possible to get insurance in principle? I need to fill in the Mortgage Deed form now and indicate that I have insurance in place which isn’t possible as I’ve not actually bought the house yet. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you.

You need buildings insurance from exchange.

@PurBal I understand that so should I just put on the form the insurance company I intend to go with?

Yes. Shop around, get a quote, and say you are not exchanging til X date. Give that name to mortgage company.

It's so weird I was never asked about my insurance on my mortgage deed
Or by my solicitors
It was in my mortgage offer that it said I needed it from
But yes just put who you intend to go with
