two sofas what colour combination

Moving into a new place and need to buy two sofas. For some reason am completely stumped when it comes to colour combinations. If there was just one - I think we would have gone for a brown leather or a safe grey sofa.

I get they should be a bit different from each other but what colours/styles work well together. The walls will be white and there will also be quite a large wooden table in the room.

Ideally, I would like something classy that lasts for a few years. What did everyone go for?

What colour are your walls and floor?

I need a sofa too but hadnt occurred to let I get two different colours tbh

Chasingsquirrels · 03/07/2021 10:14

I just got 2 the same.

The walls are white....and it's quite a big open space. If you matched them - what colours did you go for?

Op you don’t need different colour sofas. I had two rooms with two sofas and each room had the same (but the rooms were different).

You can get the same colour but play around with cushions and throws. So I have brown sofas in my sitting room and a cream / red / brown / gold theme. So I have red cushions, one red lampshade, and fur cushions and different throws.

I think get the same. If you want to be on trend then green is big this year. But really go with whatever colour you love, that also matches your life (kids and dogs might mean leather for wipe clean ease.for example, or washable covers). Pale pink was the colour last year, and I'm tempted myself.

giletrouge · 03/07/2021 11:04

Well I'd love two different sofas but my DH would hate it!

If it was up to me - one blue one green. Or one red one green. Or one blue one grey. Also I'd look at patterns but then it's a long discussion!

WUEHPU189 · 03/07/2021 11:08

Yes, see i thought that matchy matchy sofas were not on-trend. Ok I admit - I've only ever lived in rentals and have never bought sofas, can you tell. Have lived with two white sofas in our current place for a couple of years but that's been a nightmare with kids.

Does anywhere other than Ikea have washable covers?

I’d do one neutral – oatmeal/grey tweet/greige – workhorse sofa and one WOW-factor sofa, like a burnt orange or mustard yellow velvet, or green corduroy, or a floral.

Or one dusky pink, one lemon drop. One chintz, one stripe. One damson velvet, one green linen. But I like colour, love sofas, and getting two the same colour and style would be a waste of an opportunity to me.

I've seen a sofa I love and want the sofa in navy and cuddle seat in yellow. Love it so much I'll buy that and worry about wall colours later 🤣

We have one grey and one teal. We picked them at different times. Brought one from our small flat then needed a second when we had a bigger house.

coronabeers · 03/07/2021 21:12

We have blue sofa and yellow armchairs. Sofa has yellow pillows.

WUEHPU189 · 03/07/2021 21:16

lots of lovely colour combinations. How did you decide which ones to pick? Did you first go for a colour scheme or first pick the sofas?

You already have brown in the room and since grey and brown look good together, how about a brown leather chesterfield type and a more informal squidgy grey one?

Lemoncurd · 03/07/2021 21:42

We've been deliberately over this for months, no sofas in the living room all that time. Also have white walls and wooden floor.

Had been thinking teal and grey or navy and grey but then saw the sofa we wanted in the John Lewis sale in a beautiful tan leather (golden brown). Got that and ordered a 'petrol blue' (like teal but more blue/ less green) velvet sofa and chair to go with it. JL also had a rug half price with golds and similar blues to tie both together.

  • deliberating!
SwimBaby · 03/07/2021 21:54

How about one plain and one print?

JaffacakeJanine · 04/07/2021 11:13

Mustard + dark green
Yellow + light green
Teal + dark blue
Tan leather + teal/green/blue

On sofas, accessorize with pillows that match the opposite one's colours, maybe a print pillow thrown in for fun :) I think splashes of yellow/mustard on the darker colour combos look fab.

daisypond · 04/07/2021 11:16

I would get two the same. Use a throw or cushions to change the colours. Mismatched sofas will go out of fashion soon enough, so it’s good to have the flexibility to be able to match them.

coulditbecominghome · 04/07/2021 11:22

I have a neutral wool style one & a coloured velvet one. I dislike matching

SmellThat · 04/07/2021 11:43

We have a leather sofa and softer patterned feather filled sofa
I dislike matching sofas too

Topbird29 · 04/07/2021 11:56

We have 2 sofas - same style. One navy blue, one dark chocolate brown. Works well together. Was mostly accidental, as bought navy first. When looking for a 2nd we then thought brown would be nice.

Sgtmajormummy · 04/07/2021 12:09

We have a grey leather corner sofa (aka The Elephant) from our previous house when the kids were still messy and here we’ve added a fab dusky pink velvet upholstered 2 seater in prime position.
Like this one (we have those curtains).

We haven't got matching sofa/chairs as the sofa we use is quite expensive for comfort and wear and we didn't want to pay out then for something only visitors sit on occasionally so we have a brown sofa we use and 2 cheaper Ikea Stradmon armchairs in green which are barely used.
