MARGATE -v- BROADSTAIRS

I prefer Margate. It has trendier boutiques and a plethora of fabulous eateries. Margate is "edgier and funky" compared to sedate Broadstairs, which is more suited to the more conservative type of personalities. Margate is bright colours and Broadstairs is beige. This is just my opinion.

Fascinating.

What about Ramsgate?

PATSYSLBLISS · 29/06/2021 18:01

I don't really know Ramsgate. Except to say it has the best Italian restaurant ever, La Magnolia.

And what’s your take on the perennial Herne Bay-Whitstable rivalry? Or Birchington v. Westgate?

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 29/06/2021 18:12

Oooh, maybe we should do La Magnolia vs Il Tricolore?

Or Albion House (Ramsgate) vs Albion Rooms (Margate)?

PATSYSLBLISS · 29/06/2021 18:25

I do like Herne Bay, but I have 2 pooches and Herne Bay has too many restrictions on the beach for dogs. Whitstable is too busy for our liking. I prefer Westgate as we live close to West Bay, where we can freely walk our dogs off leashes at anytime.

Margate is somewhere you go to get stabbed.

Broadstairs, natural causes is more likely.

Take your pick.

💚 Broadstairs.

Herne Bay is ghastly. Thinks it's genteel, but has scary levels of antisocial and criminal behaviour. Couldn't pay me to live there.

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 29/06/2021 19:08

Westgate and Birchington are rather nice, for the most part.

According to my late dad ( who lived in Canterbury) Herne Bay was the bolt hole for the East End criminal on the run.
LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 29/06/2021 20:38

I think your dad is very probably right.

Interesting thread

Step away from the old town in Margate and you really know you’re in Thanet. Broadstairs slightly less so.

AmIPeriOrAreYouJustAnnoying · 01/07/2021 07:57

Bit racist in Kent though. That's the main problem. UKIP capitol innit?!

I don't think it's as simple as this. I've lived in Kent for the best part of a decade (I'm not a native) and I've seen precisely nothing in the way of overt racism since I've been here. I've also seen far less hostility towards others on non-racial grounds than other places I've lived: in other words, people are nicer and more tolerant here than (just for example) London, even if their party politics don't chime with yours.

Re the UKIP thing, Kent has always been quite right wing - see also Essex - but it's more of a White Van Man Tory thing than National Socialism. It's worth remembering that, even in Kent and Essex, UKIP have only one one seat in each, once. By and large, people have rejected them, like everywhere else.

And there's a big irony in dismissing the entire population of an area as 'racist' whilst making that statement from a place of ignorance and prejudice, isn't there?

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 01/07/2021 08:38

Farage tried to win in Thanet but didn't succeed and the council hasn't been UKIP since 2018.

I'm sure there are lots of people living in Thanet whose politics I abhor - but there are lots of people like that everywhere, sadly!

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 01/07/2021 08:42

Oh, cross posts!

Re the UKIP thing, Kent has always been quite right wing - see also Essex - but it's more of a White Van Man Tory thing than National Socialism. Absolutely.

I agree it's depressing when people dismiss an entire area (in fact an entire county!) like this.

Kent as a whole is a beautiful county and I have a very soft spot for Planet Thanet itself.

Agree about the racism thing. I doubt Kent is any more racist than most other counties. I grew up there and go there there frequently and don’t particularly overhear/ see racist incidents.
