Open plan living space - sizes

We have put an offer in on a house which has a separate kitchen and dining room. I would love to knock the wall down and create an open plan kitchen diner with space for a TV and sofa etc.

The size is 19ft 1 by 11ft 4. So it is longer and thinner rather than square. Does anyone have a similar size open plan space and if so would you mind showing me so I can get an idea. I would ideally like an island and then a table coming off the island if that makes sense.

Thank you!

Rather than knock through completely, I'd recommend having pocket doors separating your living room from kitchen/diner.

Ooh what are pocket doors??

Our living - dining room is slightly bigger than that and whilst we have an eight-seater dining table and a fairly large sofa, even with smaller versions of both I can’t imagine having the space for a kitchen in here as well without it feeling cramped and full, particularly not one with an island.

Have you drawn out a to-scale plan of where you’d put everything, to see what sort of space you’d have.

No I haven't drawn it out yet but that is a good idea.

Would just say space for a kitchen, island and dining table without the sofa then? Or still a struggle?

We viewed a house with a living room which is 11ft by 18ft and I think a living/kitchen/dining room wouldn't be workable in that space, even with a little extra.

Two of the three would be ok, but I doubt you'd get an island in a kitchen that size. It's not necessarily the units etc that you need to consider, it's the clearance and walking space between them.

We are going to have a room almost exactly the same dimensions once we've knocked through but I don't think there's room for anything other than kitchen diner, and I don't think an island will work either in ours. The layout of yours in terms of doors etc may mean it's possible but I think it's a lot to fit in the space.

Pocket doors slide into walls like this

I think an OK kitchen diner but now way fjr a sofa area too. But draw ot out on grid paper and cut out shapes for table, chairs, sofa and island. Remember they recommend 1m between island and any other solid (wall or unit).and 1m minimum around table for pulling out chairs and sitting comfortably. More if you need to walk behind the chairs.

Mine is approx 10 metres by 5 metres and it's tonnes of space for living kitchen diner

BackforGood · 24/06/2021 14:46

but 30' is quite a lot bigger than 19' and 15' is quite a lot bigger than 11'

I agree with most, I can't see how you can get an island, a table, a sofa, and all your kitchen cupboards, cooker and white goods in there, with enough space to make it useable.

Love LivingintheClouds advice.

Ours will be just under 13ft x 25ft when done and there's no room for an island in that width (not without it looking squashed) so will have a peninsula and dining table plus sofa. Will post a pic later when I'm home. Smile

TheCrookedKind · 24/06/2021 16:07

My kitchen diner is 21 ft x 11 ft, and it's perfect for a kitchen diner (with peninsula) but definitely wouldn't fit a sofa.

CatNamedEaster · 24/06/2021 16:46

This is our plan. Total length is 7.6m (25ft) x 3.6m (just under 12ft). We will be having a sliding door to utility area, 2 seat sofa and dining table.
