Washing machine and dryer under the stairs?

My kitchen is tiny and I have no utility area.
Is it ever possible to put a washing machine under the stairs (and possibly a dryer on-top) ?

The electric meter/fuse board is in there already, but I assume that is fairly easy to move within the cupboard?
The condensed boiler is also in there, does that mean I could use the 'in' water pipes from there? The waste pipe could then go outside an run along the side of the house to the kitchen waste (about 2-3 meters away?)
Does this sound feasible?
I'm hoping to book a builder in for a few jobs, and its hard (understandably) to get them out to quote for small jobs, so I am hoping someone on here might know so I can plan for it in my kitchen re-jiggle.
Thanks

I don't think you could have a dryer near fuseboard - my condenser gives off a lot of heat/ warm air but I could be wrong.

I think the minimum distance from appliances for a Consumer unit is 1 metre.
Would you have this much room under the stairs?
It’s also dangerous practice to put something that’s the main cause house fires under the stairs.

Sounds like it's not worth the risk then Sad - back to the drawing board!

I have def seen houses with dryer under stairs (family so I know it has been fine), & i have seen right move listings & viewed houses with a washer dryer under stairs

I would investigate further. Others have made points about heat etc, but I would still look into getting confirmation from a plumber or electrician

I’m currently looking at doing similar, I had a builder/plumber look at it last week and I’m waiting for a quote, he was saying it depends on the amount of clearance above the stairs and some other stuff but it is possible.

My dryer is under the stairs,we always use it while we are around and with the door to the cupboard open.

Any possibility of washing machine in bathroom.
My kitchen is tiny still got washing machine and dishwasher in, fridge freezer in hall

There are lots of rules about putting washing machines in bathrooms.

CombatBarbie · 21/06/2021 20:47

Washing machines and driers is very common in Europe, quite genius when you think about it especially if you live in a house.

CombatBarbie · 21/06/2021 20:47

I meant very popular in bathrooms 🤦🏼‍♀️

Sounds like a huge fire hazard to me. Most houses only have one staircase so this could also block or destroy an exit in the event of a fire....

HappyDaysToCome · 21/06/2021 21:54

Tumble dryers are a fire risk, it’s really not a good idea to put them under the stairs.

Not just risking the stairs (escape route), but depending on the configuration of your hall/ stairway you could have a fire spread far more quickly through your house.

There is as much chance of it catching fire in the kitchen as there is under the stairs, if it fits it’s a good idea and I have seen them inset in the space so more like a built with the front exposed to the hallway. Your bigger issue will be moving your fuse board, if you need to as the cables may not reach, it’s definitely not a simple job, worth looking at putting in the bathroom as many aeroplanes put them upstairs or in the bathroom, it’s only us English that are obsessed with putting them in the kitchen

Europeans, although maybe they put them upstairs in aeroplanes 😁

Where was the washing machine when you bought the house/flat???

lockef · 22/06/2021 00:37

@Eleoura

Where was the washing machine when you bought the house/flat???
Washing machine was/is in the kitchen - but I have no full cupboards under the counter - only under the sink (if you can call it that) and I need the fridge/freezer in the kitchen way more than I need the washing machine close to me when I'm cooking/prepping food.

No dryer currently- but could do with one, especially when we have weather like we currently have!

I have a washer/dryer under the stairs, I use the shelves above it for cleaning products and while the dryer is not fantastic I use it when desperate. I have put a door on the alcove and when the dryer function is on just leave the door ajar, great use of space and everything nice and tidy.

wtheck · 22/06/2021 07:33

What about on the landing?

Our washer and dryer are upstairs and I'd never put them downstairs again. The only washing we have to carry up and down is tea towels!
