We're moving out tomorrow for 10 weeks to get a long planned and wanted renovation only took 7 years to convince dh done. Excellent builder I really trust is starting work on Monday. What the hell are we doing?? I'm surrounded by boxes, there's stuff everywhere, kids are excited but sad they'll miss summer holidays and evenings playing with their friends on the road... Aaarrrggghhhh! My head is spinning and my heart is racing. i know it will all be fine, but, but, but...Will it?

Yes. Once it's all complete it will look amazing. Try and bear with it for the next few weeks, it will feel strange and a bit upside down but just remember that you've wanted this for a long time and now it's finally being done so just try to focus on getting back into your home and how lovely it will feel

How exciting! Congratulations. You’ll be fine! Normal to feel like this. Take lots of ‘before’ photos and make sure you take pictures of any valuables for insurance purposes. Make sure you tell your insurance company about the works and that your main contractor has sufficient insurance and that you’ve seen a copy of it. Also if you are responsible for ordering any fixtures that you have whatever the contractors need on site. I always buy a cheap loo brush and a mahoosive bottle of bleach and leave it in the existing loo. Better still hire portaloos. Once your new loo or any sink/sanitary/kitchen ware is fitted (if appropriate) make sure contractors understand what they are and are not allowed to use otherwise you’ll find your new loo christened or that the decorator has washed oil based paint in your sink. All workmen take the route of least resistance so if you don’t clear something out of a room they’ll assume it’s ok to get plaster on/paint etc. Best of luck!

I think the conversation with the house insurance put the frighteners on me - we are only covered for explosion, fire or lightning strike while we're out 😱😂 have seen builders insurance so we're grand there. Need to clear some space to take the before photos! I moved a lot of precious items to my mum's today and we'll take others with us. Good idea about the bleach and loo brush!

Thanks both of you, dh keeps rolling his eyes at me when I start stressing. I'll keep poring over my plans and renders instead.
