New owners are complaining

Ok I had the buyers from hell. They offered 40K under and then stalled and stalled and stalled for nearly 6 months and prices rocketed. Throughout this time I said I wouldn't have other viewing. They criticised everything -and I paid over £3K to right things that they complained about -including paying for a new hall carpet and then found out they are ripping up the brand new carpet. I had to cancel the removal firm twice and was lucky to get a slot before completing. They only completed when I said I was putting it back on the market. I was living the other end of the country.
I returned back for the removals to pack -but they didn't do a fab job. I needed to do 6 loads of the garage to the tip for example. I paid for someone to clean the house. Some bits of furntiture went on local free sites -but I was told they had been collected -but actually two bookcases -haven't been. They are saying the log pile wasn't removed -that is fixed and I never said I was taking it. I had a load of car tyres -that I used as potato planters- they said they haven't gone and another passageway -I didn't realise had some garden furniture and plant pots down there. The new buyers are creating merry hell.

What if anything can I do?

I promised to take garden ornaments but nothing else

No. You sold a property which you were supposed to leave empty. Just stop making bloody excuses and make swift arrangements to remove all your junk

The reason you're getting a hard time is because you're the one in the wrong yet you're calling them the 'buyers from hell'! I wonder what they're saying about you, given the mess you've left behind for them?

Believe me they did stall and stall and I lost a house buy because of it. I'm not asking if I'm right or wrong- suggestions on what I can do is better. I think I'm going to hire a skip or see how much it is and get it done. I don't know a house clearance locally. Actually I had confirmation from someone they were picking up the bookcase -but clearly they didn't show. I didn't realise the removal firm had left anything down the side passageway! Stop having a go -I didn't say I wasn't wrong but actually the dates ended up being when I needed to get back here for work. But I can't put the details on here but when your buyer demands new carpets and you shell out a few K and then find they are ripping them out -it's a bit shit as well as the endless other moans that I fixed for them - which I can't go into as it's too outing!

Then maybe a simple thread asking for advice on what you should do, rather than calling them 'buyers for hell' and moaning about irrelevant things like them offering £40k under asking, might have focused the thread more closely on solutions 🤷‍♀️

I'll be honest, I think they're being very fussy! The tyres I understand (we were left some once and they do look scruffy) however some plant pots and a log store I can't see an issue - we've been left both and I was happy with the pots.

However as pp said you do technically have to leave empty. If you do think they're CF I'd go and move the items myself, if you get a skip they might not even use it to put your left over items in and simply use it to get rid of their own junk.

I'm sorry they were difficult buyers.

It is absolutely your legal responsibility to remove anything from the property (inside and out) that it wasn't specifically agreed would be left (on fixtures and fitting form or separate agreement). You would be utterly unreasonable not to do this. Pay for a clearance service.

OP it's very simple.

You can't leave your crap behind.

And them complaining about it does not make them buyers from hell.

And your distance isn't their problem. Nor is your removal firm their problem. Nor the cost of a skip their problem.

And no, they don't want your recycled tyre "planters". Or your discarded furniture. And they are fully entitled to say so.

Is this the first time you've sold a house?

Just move your stuff and leave the place empty. That's all there is to it.

I too would create merry hell if I bought a house and on moving day discovered a load of old tyres filled with potatoes in my new garden.

What happened during the buying process or what they did with the carpets is irrelevant and in no way a justification.

You have left a lot of shite behind. So you need to get rid. You need to go up there and do so, or get someone else to. Hire a man with a van who does rubbish removals and ensure he has a licence for waste disposal.

My previous owners left loads of junk, and I mean proper broken junk, in the loft

I've no idea how they got it up there would have been easier to take it to tip round the corner

Not only did I have to remove the junk they left behind I had to pay to make the loft hatch bigger and a ladder fitted as it was the only safe way to get the rubbish down

I wish I’d gone after them for the costs, I would these days

Needs to be removed as other posters have said

No way in hell would I let a buyer snag an existing property. You were very patient, I would have lost my shit 😅

House clearance or similar is your only option I think. Just google a firm near you. You can’t expect the buyers to drag your old crap to a skip for you!

I’d be really fucked off if someone left tyres here. One of the old tenants left one and it’s been here for YEARS. The council won’t collect tyres, and the tip doesn’t accept them… and it’s hassle to find someone to collect a tyre that wasn’t even mine to start with.

It’s unfortunate that you didn’t have time to deal with what’s been left, and that your removal company let you down - you’ve had some pretty bad luck there! If the removal company were instructed to empty those places, you should be able to organise with them to go and finish the job that they’ve presumably been paid for. If they weren’t; you’ll probably have to find someone else who can - removal firm or local friend or whatever - without putting the new buyers out any further.

They may be dicks, and you may be cursing them under your breath, but you legally need to remove all of your stuff.

There is a fire and the log pile is a proper structure -roof on it -and it is drilled into the space behind the garage -so in my mind fixture and fitting. I promised to take garden ornaments but nothing else.

I don't need a hard time. I can't hire a van and go back -we are now 100s of miles away. I suppose I could see how much a skip is.

A skip is a possible idea but, again, who is going to organise actually getting the stuff in it? Do you have any friends or family in the area that will sort this? If not I’d be ringing around clearance firms and seeing what they can do.

You chose to accept an offer £40k under asking.

You chose to allow the sale to take over 6 months.

You chose to spend money on new carpets.

You chose to leave old tyres and other shit there when you left.

This is 100% on you, OP.

Is there a registered waste removals company locally who’d take it all away and save you having to travel?

Them buying crap buyers doesnt excuse you from being a crap seller.

Sounds like youve left a load of crap in and around the house, and all you have is a few vague attempts to get people to collect? When these people show up are the new owners expected to let them in and give them access to the bookcases?

Even now you are talking about looking into skip hire. Are new owners expected to fill said skip, and have it on their land for a length of time?

This is 100% on you, and you should be doing it to minimise any disruption to new owners as you possibly can. If i was the new owner i wouldnt be letting you put a skip down on my land.

Just block them. The cost of legal fees will be way more than paying for someone to remove them.

Most houses I've bought/sold have had some form of detritus left behind. Never on a million years would I have made a massive song and dance about it.

One seller left a large concrete bust of the former owners head, for example.

When I've bought houses its always been agreed beforehand what is being left behind. I'd be furious if I'd have to deal with unwanted stuff myself after moving in.

Have you tried local charity shops, they sometimes will collect furniture for free to sell. We did this with our unwanted furniture and they collected once we had left.

I thik the issue op will have is no one will want to come out and pick up her crappy old planters tyres from the garden.

So she was hoping the new owners would deal with it but she was wrong. And legally the law is on the new owners side.

Did you list it as a fixture and fitting, if not you have to remove it.

You will need to make a trip and remove the bookcases, items you forgot to dispose of, and dismantle and remove the log pile (unless listed in the inventory)

Being hundreds of miles away is no excuse. Get a train or a van, get down their and remove your belongings
