Struggling to decide on new bathroom, any help please?

We need to decide on colour scheme, tiles etc for bathroom refit happening very soon. Been to Topps Tiles & B&Q this weekend and have spent hours scrolling through pinterest but now I’m just overwhelmed & don’t know what to go with.

DH and i both love the patterned floor tile look and found one we like in blue & white. But then he suggested having white metro tiles on the bath/shower wall & paint the others. I think I’m hesitating because I keep thinking does the floor suit our style of house which is a 1960’s & what i would call ‘beige’. This patterned floor we like, although lovely, is it more suited to a Victorian style house? Does it matter? I just feel like we’ll go from a ‘beige’ landing area to a quite strikingly different bathroom style. Should I go for something more in keeping with the rest of the house, whatever that is? Just bored of beige really😩

Also worried about a whole wall of white metro tiles and the cleaning of them!

Has anyone gone for this kind of patterned floor tile and what did you do on the walls?

I think the patterned floor is lovely. I'm a firm believer with interior design that you should go with what you love - this will make a wonderful (and shocking but in a pleasant way) change from the beige landing.

Ginandplatonic · 14/06/2021 02:39

Well I have a modern bathroom with large format tiles in a Victorian house, the opposite of your situation. Smile So, although those tiles are not to my personal taste, I would say get what you love - especially in a room like the bathroom - and it doesn’t matter if the bathroom doesn’t “go” with the rest of the decor.

Ouchiehelpneeded · 14/06/2021 07:00

Definitely get what you love!

Re: metro tiles, we went with larger format tiles laid in the same way. They look great and reduce the amount of grout you need to keep clean.

Littlemiss74 · 14/06/2021 07:54

@Ouchiehelpneeded did you get white large tiles? Could you tell me which ones/where from please?

Thank you @Dinosauraddict we do both love this kind of floor but I’m so worried about making an expensive mistake! Also think will it date more so than a plain white or beige look but then we are not planning to move from here so it doesn’t really matter I suppose. Do you have any suggestions for the wall tiles to go with this kind of floor? It can only be plain white/cream tiles I think can’t it? We are both so bad at putting colour schemes together & I find it hard to visualise things.

@Ginandplatonic thank you that’s what I needed to hear! I think I’m overthinking it all😩 My DH & I were quite set on the patterned floor tile and then my 9 year old DD said I don’t like that and it threw me & I started questioning it! Another night then followed spent on Pinterest searching for other ideas. I just can’t seem to make a confident ecision about anything😩

@Littlemiss74 it’s so hard not to second guess yourself when there’s so much choice out there. I think plain white large format wall tiles would be great - less busy and would let the floor be the star. And less grout for cleaning has to be a good thing! I’m in Aus so can’t help you with where to get them though.

Ouchiehelpneeded · 14/06/2021 08:08

We used these: www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/devine-whites-tiles-gloss-60x30-white-wall-tiles

They look great. If you're in South Wales I have an unused box you're welcome to have!

GlitterBicuits · 14/06/2021 08:14

I've been looking at wall tiles for weeks too.
I'm put off by all grout turning yellow.
I have grey grout on my kitchen tiles and I hate it.
So I can't see a way to have tiles and be happy.

You have my sympathy OP. There's too much choice out there!

averythinline · 14/06/2021 08:36

I got Large plain white metro tiles from b and q..they're great lot less grout...used dark grout and that would look good with your patterned tiles..
I used ones like those in blue from porcelain warehouse..they were really good to deal with and sent Samples which helped...

If you're planning to be ggere for a while..choose what you like ...

This is my bathroom floor. It’s a tiny bathroom (no bath) and we have very big plain grey tiles in the shower then painted panelling round the walls, painted walls above. In hindsight, I wish I’d chosen matte tiles as they don’t show the water marks as much. I’m glad we had the panelling fitted as we could gs by simply repainting.

Don’t get metro tiles unless you want to spend your life cleaning them! But if you do, go for dark grout - it’s the grout that gets dirty.

We have patterned tiles like that in our bathroom and I still love them - the tiler used a mid grey grout and they clean up beautifully compared to the lino we had before. We also dithered about what wall tiles to go for and ended up choosing large wet room panels on the walls behind the shower/bath instead of tiles, which means no grouting. We're really happy with them too. White tiles (metro or otherwise) will also look good with the patterned floor though.

Littlemiss74 · 14/06/2021 10:05

@TheGirlOnTheLanding so you used grey grout on the floor tiles? I hadn’t thought of that. Is the pattern also grey?

Thank you @Ginandplatonic yes that’s what we were thinking, either need the statement on the floor or the walls but not both.

Thanks @Ouchiehelpneeded they look great, are they shiny or matt & are they easy to clean? Not near you sadly but thanks for the kind offer.

@averythinline so you use dark grout with white tiles, does that look ok, I haven’t seen that before?

@Soontobe60 I love that floor, where is it from please? And your wall tiles? Yes I think I’ve decided we won’t go for metro tiles as I know who’ll end up cleaning them!!

@TheGirlOnTheLanding would you mind showing me a picture of your floor tiles please so I can see it with the grey grout? Where did you get yours from?

We have similar floor tiles (white, light blue and grey pattern) then have metro tiles in the shower area. We used the same grey grout for both sets of tiles.
It's a small bathroom and it comes off a relatively modern looking bit of the house which is white walls and laminate flooring.
Although it seems a bit victorian I think keeping it light with white paint etc puts a more modern spin on it.

Bluesheep8 · 14/06/2021 10:20

So you use dark grout with white tiles, does that look ok, I haven’t seen that before?

Dark grout is more commonly used than white I think.
We've got white metro tiles in both our kitchen and bathroom and both have grey grout.

Blossomtoes · 14/06/2021 10:29

Our kitchen has metro tiles with grey grout. I really liked it when it was first done. I absolutely hate it now and will be delighted to see the back of it when we redo the kitchen.

That floor is beautiful, I can’t imagine ever getting tired of it.

YellowFish12 · 14/06/2021 10:30

Bathrooms don't have to match the style of the house. That is the beauty of them :-)

Go for the patterned floor you love.

@Littlemiss74 here are ours (apologies, they need a mop!)

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 14/06/2021 10:41

Sorry, forgot to add link. We got them from here but it was a few years ago: https://www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/

Authenticcelestialmusic · 14/06/2021 10:44

If you want to consider LVT I have this www.carpetright.co.uk/luxury-vinyl-tiles/starfloor-tile-retro-indigo-luxury-vinyl-tile/.

It is really nice. I have white tiles, slightly larger than metro. grey grout. Exposed shower rail etc. I got the cabinet from IKEA (I think they are fantastic) so much space. The light underneath it comes on via sensor so you don’t have a ceiling light at night. Also I recommend blue tooth speakers in the ceiling!

My house is modern, the bathroom is Victorian style but I love it and others have complimented it too.

Littlemiss74 · 14/06/2021 10:53

@Authenticcelestialmusic any chance of a bathroom pic? Could you link to the ikea cabinet please?

Thanks so much everyone, you’ve made me feel better about the floor & that it can work ok in a more modern house, not at 60’s is that modern!😄
