Electric gates

Does anyone have electric gates? How do you manage deliveries? We're buying a property with them but there isn't any way of alerting someone inside the house that you need access. We get a lot of deliveries and I'm wondering how they will work.

We had them at our previous house. Had an intercom system and I could open the gates from the house.

We eventually got ours adjusted to be able to keep them open. They had been set to automatically close after a certain amount of time. I much preferred being able to open them in the morning and keep them open all day and just close them at night.

If you can’t do that you need an intercom system of some sort.

There must be some form of intercom, otherwise how have the previous owners let friends, parcels etc in?

Our previous house had a little shed on the drive (beyond the gates) for the wheelie bin. You couldn’t see the open side from the road. We used to get deliveries left on top of the bins.

The current house doesn’t have anything like that so we just leave the gates open in the day if we know we have parcels coming, and shut them at night. There is a little postbox outside the gates for letters but parcels won’t fit in it.

Neighbour has these. They have an intercom
Connected to their mobile phone - as they either a) don’t have a mobile signal or b) have their phone with them, either they leave the gates open (pointless!) or I ended up having a shed full of their parcels.

If your WiFi reaches the gate, cheap option is something like Nest or Ring, where the bell goes through to your phone and you can open gates from the phone. If like me you don’t keep your phone on you, more expensive option is to fit gate opening system, but will need to be hard wired back to bell and intercom in house, but will probably cost several thousand.

Sorry as Bargebill says if no WiFi can use gps phone system but goes through to phone still and have to pay for SIM card rent in entry point monitor.

Our neighbour will not pay for a hard wired system. Apparently there is an issue with installing a ring or similar system too. I suspect it £. If it’s not for alcohol, they aren’t known for readily parting with £…
Or grumpy me is free..

I have them at my house, there is an alert button for delivery's, and I can always use my remote fob to open the side gate if necessary. Normally when I am expecting a delivery, I leave the side gate on the open mode.

Intercom and camera to see who is pressing the buzzer.

icedancerlenny · 13/06/2021 20:27

I have an intercom which also rings my phone. I can open them from my phone. If I’m expecting something important I can leave them open all day.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 13/06/2021 20:28

We have had ones with an intercom and current one has a pedestrian gate wth buzzer for delivery.

There’s a house round the corner from us that has, what looks like a delivery shoot, built into the brick pillar/wall next to their electric gates. Kind of like the ones that banks have so people can drop deposits of money in - but larger(!). I thought it was an ingenious idea. Never seen one before.
Im guessing it’s expensive to have installed 😅

We’ve got electric gates, we share them with another 3 properties, when someone needs to deliver something, we have a numbered intercom system, each property is listed on the intercom with a button next to it so they only have to press for the property they need, which in turn rings our landline and we can let them in from the handset.

If we want to keep the gates open we put an upturned plastic pot over the sensor to keep it open, we can also open the gates using a 4 digit code which our postman has.
