Kitchen refresh- help please

Our kitchen is tired and old. I wanted to rip it all out but for various reasons, we are just going to refresh it. I have no eye for design/ what looks nice and don't really know where to begin! Just looking to change doors, worktop, sink and floor but keep base units and layout. I want something modern and bright looking (as in not dark wood etc) Where do I begin and any ideas on nice combinations? We have someone to do the work who is a friend - it's just choosing what to buy that stumps me...
