Gappy fences

When did these become a thing?

I've noticed on a lot of newer properties online and new builds I've seen locally these seem to be really prevalent. Why on earth would anyone would a fence with a gap to see into the neighbour's garden?! Do you just end up having to put up another fence or bambo screening?

Reduced the chance the wind will blow it down

Reduced cost also given shortages in fence panels

Common up north, perhaps northerners are more friendly ( ducks snd runs )

Very common up here in north Lancashire

They're cheaper.
My neighbours that have them have nearly all replaced them with traditional fence panels.
