Why is the rental market so crazy at the moment? Will it calm down soon?

Our landlord has given us six months notice (he's seen the rising house prices and wants to cash in Sad) but even getting a viewing is impossible. I called about a house that had been on Rightmove for just a few hours and it already had 30 viewings booked!

It's a crazy time to be moving but sadly we have no choice. Do you think the market will calm down in a few months time? I could go for a rubbish house now just so I can get one but I don't want to regret it. I'd like to hold on but am scared! Has anyone got a crystal ball? Grin

Two reasons. One is people renting moving out of city centres and wanting more space / garden etc. So decent houses with room are under massive demand.

The other is people wanting to move house who are breaking chains and going into rented (or have been in rented) and who under normal circumstances wouldn't have adding to pressures.

I imagine if you were looking for a city centre flat somewhere you'd strike a decent bargain. If not, you're competing with everyone else who wants the same.

I should add I'm selling and buying at the moment. I was going to move last year and move into rental, but as you say it's just so crazy at the moment, even that isn't a realistic option now.

I think it's quite mixed really, where we live zone 3 London rents have actually gone down a bit. So you might need to explore other areas? Is it crazy everywhere around you?

Thanks @readytosell that kinda makes sense. Hopefully those people renting to break the chain will buy some on leaving more places available. I can see how it might be linked to the stamp duty holiday - maybe when that ends the madness will slow.

@dreamingbohemian unfortunately we are in the place everyone wants. Rural Oxfordshire. Already have a big house with a lovely garden so want the same. It's just a shame that's what everyone else is looking for at the moment!
