Curtains or blinds?

What’s the trend at the moment?
What looks good?
What’s easier to clean?
What easier to fit?
Any photos for visual inspiration?

We’re thinking of buying a new build and I want to keep some of our house sale money back to really make the place look nice!

Blinds for bedrooms and full length curtains for livingrooms. But really it depends in your design and style - there's no in or out for curtains and blinds. Style of curtains, yes.
I still like shutters too.

Both

Which room?
We've had blinds in living room for 5yrs and just redecorating, think we'll go for curtains. Cosier. Less stark.

We have fabric Roman blinds in our formal lounge. Full length curtains at two big windows in our second more informal lounge. We are getting blinds in the dining room to replace curtains. Every bedroom has Roman blinds. I feel they are cosy when down. I think curtains look best with high ceilings and largely I don’t have them!

I would look at the style of the room you wish to create and decide what works.

I forgot to say, I don’t really think about cleaning when going for a style. I also don’t really think about fixing. The curtains have poles. The blinds are attached to wood battens which are screwed to the wall. The blinds have chain mechanisms.

So sorry!! Ignore first two photos! They were deleted on my phone! The last one is obviously a blind.

I have no idea about trendiness but blinds always look cold. I have Roman blinds in the study and curtains every where else. Blinds only acceptable in the study because it is a working room. Every other room needs the cosiness of curtains to not look shit. In my opinion!

I think it's all personal, I don't think people follow trends as much with window coverings.

I think blinds often look more modern but vertical blinds are old fashioned and roman blinds aren't to my taste. I think it has to go with the style of your house too. I have a mixture, some blackout thermal blinds that are honeycombed with a foil layer, some 50cm wood venetians and some thermal blinds that let the light through in the conservatory, hall and landing. I also have curtains on some of the windows too.

I got my blinds from blinds-2go and hung them myself which was very straightforward, you measure your window and they make the blind for you there are lots of online suppliers who can do that for you.

Blinds for me, I just am not a fan of curtains, I have Roman blinds everywhere, in different beautiful fabrics, from velvet to silk, and then in the bedrooms and kitchen I have wooden shutter blinds.

These are the guys I used, they do both curtains and blinds and send out free samples of material, service was great.

I had wooden venetian blinds fitted everywhere (big slats, cream color) when we bought our house over a decade ago and I still love them.
I like how neat they look like from the outside, how I can just wipe them clean. They are not as cold as vertical blinds (which I hate with a passion) and they give a contemporary look.
Personally I don't like curtains in smaller houses like mine as they tend to look outdated. I like them in big apartments with huge floor to ceiling windows for instance....

Bluntness100 · 24/05/2021 12:31

Yes I like curtains on certain properties, huge windows, massive long luxurious curtains, with beautiful fabric, generous pleats/gathers, can be really stunning.

Any where else, it can easily look very dated, especially ones that are short. Generally the ones I see are very functional, as to make it look in any way luxurious is an absolute fortune.

I think in this it’s all about taste, the only universal is most folks hate vertical blinds.

I honestly spent years with no window treatments as I just couldn’t decide what I wanted, as everything I saw I was really meh about. Then when I found what I did like I did the whole house. But it took me years to decide.

I think blinds alone are quite cold looking. I prefer curtains but in bedrooms I like both and in kitchen, just blinds as easier to clean on the whole.

I still like shutters though, I'd have shutters and curtains.
