painting concrete outside

has anyone tried it, what did it turn out like? we have grey concrete terrace and can't afford a decent covering yet, like slabs - or at least, not a priority - and i was thinking of painting it a sandy colour. I am afraid it will look worse not better. Has anyone tried and got a fab result?

It will wear off and look shabby

mayblossominapril · 13/05/2021 20:15

It’s fine to paint concrete, do use a proper concrete paint. It will wear off after a couple of years and will have to be repainted.

lazylockdowner · 13/05/2021 20:15

Yes my patio was Sandy buff colour and I painted it light grey, used wickes patio paint. Been two years now and still fine no peeling or flakes, personally I will redo this year in a darker grey as the only think that annoyed me was seeing the dirty marks but then I have 4 kids and a paddling pool running over it with muddy feet

Painting stuff creates maintenance.

diyqueenie · 13/05/2021 20:20

lazylockdowner what kind of prep did you do? was it painted sandy buff before you started or was it coloured concrete? thanks!

I used concrete paint on my stable floor and it survived 3 years of the horse on it before it flaked. The concrete needs to be very very clean and dry before you start.

diyqueenie · 13/05/2021 20:22

pigletjohn did this happen to you? if so, how shabby?!

Everyone in our local area paints the edges of their front steps white.
Use good quality masonry paint.

diyqueenie · 13/05/2021 20:24

that sounds quite impressive actually, 3 years with a horse mayblossom did you jetwash it clean before you started or just hose it?

OP posts:
FelicityPike · 13/05/2021 20:25

Oh and it needs redoing every year.

mayblossominapril · 13/05/2021 20:34

Hands and knees with a scrubbing brush.

minipie · 13/05/2021 20:45

I saw someone who’d stencilled a geometric pattern on hers. It actually looked quite good - I think partly because she had plenty of pots and furniture on the terrace as well, and beds round the edge. Would matter less if bits flake off because it’s not solid to start with?

diyqueenie · 13/05/2021 20:55

Thanks all. Hands and knees with scrubbing brush it is! i am hoping that if it flakes it will look shabby chic in a good way. The patios in whie company photo shoots are sometimes flaking...

Alex steadman (the frugality) on Instagram painted hers this week on Instagram it looked good I thought.

BluebellsGreenbells · 13/05/2021 20:57

Can you borrow a jet wash? That worked for my concrete wall.

lazylockdowner · 13/05/2021 22:44

No wasn't painted before, they were just buff patio slabs, the slabs do need to be very dry before you paint so I would wait until we get some good weather before you start, only prep I did was a good sweep before hand and a good scrub but if doing that allow to dry properly before hand, I just used a roller to paint it was very quick and I have a large patio over 2 levels

mareep · 14/05/2021 08:23

Depending on availability budget, IKEA recently started offering this decking. I wouldn't have it anywhere which could get muddy though. Much cheaper than nicer pavers.

That decking looks great - trouble is that I would have thought that for those of us with manky concrete it is also usually not at all level so you couldnt just cover it easily.

I have gone for outdoor rugs instead of painting but it still isnt great.

Embracelife · 14/05/2021 20:36

IKEA runnen because it s in tiles that clip together it goes fine over uneven concrete

JohnsRaincoatLost · 14/05/2021 20:57

A huge number of people have done this on YouTube including people in the UK

I think it will be fine, clean them and just use the right paint for concrete.
