Do you walk barefoot in your house?

Being a wimp, I always prefer to wear some sort of footwear at home – e.g. slippers in winter, flip-flops in summer (if we’re lucky enough to have a warm one). Ok, we have a fluffy monster of a dog and the indoor-outdoor boundaries get blurred in the room with the garden access, but even when we visit some our friends’ immaculately clean homes, I feel uncomfortable if I have to surrender my shoes.

However, reading many floor-related threads on MN, I see lots of comments about, for example, tiled / bare wood floors being too cold to stand on, etc. Surely, if you wear some sort of home shoes, this isn’t an issue? Or am I a slipper-wearing freak and most people just wander around their houses barefoot or in socks at most? Blush Confused

Can't stand slippers or socks, if I have to wear socks I can't wait to take them off. I always wish I did like home footwear because some slippers are so cute and they keep your feet warm in the winter. But I just find it so uncomfortable. I'm more comfortable with cold feet than wearing socks or slippers. I wear socks at least in other people's houses though, wouldn't want to give them the heebee jeebees, I know some people don't like looking at feet.

Stichintime · 09/05/2021 02:57

Mostly bare foot at home, or socks occasionally. Don't like having hot feet. Would never go bare foot in someone else's house though, I keep some trainer socks in my bag to put on when I take my shoes off.

We have all hard floors, a mixture of tiles and wood, with a few rugs to soften the look. I can't bear fitted carpets, so grubby. DH is a 'shoes on' man, I wear slippers or socks unless it's very hot weather, adult DS always goes barefoot. Older DC when they come home are either in socks or barefoot. We don't find our carpetless home cold.

No
I absolutely hate being barefoot! Socks all the way.

joystir59 · 09/05/2021 03:26

Crocs indoors always, hate being bare foot except on the beach. I have half a dozen pairs of crocs in different colours.

Lullaby88 · 09/05/2021 03:27

Socks and slippers. Hate being barefooted around the house. Our house is fully carpetted too. But i just love my slippers so much and feel strange when i dont wear them.

Oh wow, interesting Shock - barefooters all round so far.

I'm guessing so far this must be down to individual physiology. My feet are usually cold and I can't bear that feeling, hence the year-round footwear cover of some sort. But this maybe just down to my upbringing in the "slippers always on" household, and my feet haven't had a chance to harden off? Or am I missing out on a cultural norm? Confused

Also, unless the house is utmost immaculate, don't you get that feeling that your feet get too mucky too quickly?

Hehe, slipper/sock comrades have arrived while I was drafting my response Grin

I wear slippers always. In summer indoors slippers/ light flip flops. And winter socks and slippers. We have hardwood floors downstairs and I can’t bear the feeling of bits stuck to my feet - even if just hoovered they magically seem to appear.

Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 09/05/2021 04:02

Barefoot or slippers. Socks too faffy. Put on when feet cold, slip off when feet hot.

Yes, this is so true!!!

Kinda other side of the coin - a few years ago, in the previous house, a new neighbour knocked on the door asking for some sugar (probably just an excuse to say hello, which is totally fine). Mid-March, she was standing there, on a concrete step by our front door, barefoot. Temperature comfort aside, isn't walking barefoot outdoors and then getting back into a house sort of the same as traipsing in outdoorsy shoes all over the indoors?

Always socks.

habibihabibi · 09/05/2021 04:07

Barefoot but I have a four pairs of flip-flops outside each external door for garden wear.

Pyewackect · 09/05/2021 04:08

No, I wear flip flops 🩴.

safariboot · 09/05/2021 04:08

Downstairs is plastic tiles on cement subfloor, bare feet will be cold feet! Socks are enough, slippers are better.

Upstairs it's no problem to have bare feet though.

24GinDrinkingOnceTheKidsInBed · 09/05/2021 04:09

I always have socks on, except in bed!
I can’t stand walking about bare foot. I hate being bare foot in any circumstance. The beach, grass, pools.. I just can’t stand it. Always socks, I don’t really wear shoes in the house unless just in the kitchen or when I’m doing a big clean up (I don’t know why but it makes me feel more efficient)
Sometimes slippers but then my feet get too hot.

NoIdeasForWittyNickname · 09/05/2021 04:11

I mean I didn't mind the barefoot neighbour coming into my house, given that it would be limited to somewhat messy ground floor. Just wondered about not being able to "take off" the mucky feet (unlike shoes/crocks/socks) when hopping between outdoor and indoor in her own home.

I love having bare feet when it’s warm enough. I wear socks and sometimes slippers if it’s cold.

NoIdeasForWittyNickname · 09/05/2021 04:16

Haha, I have to admit, I sometimes wear socks in bed, speically dedicated fluffy ones Blush. But usually on cold nights when DH is away on a trip or for similar reason so I can't use his flesh to warm up my froggy-freezing limbs Grin

My toddler DC goes barefoot in the garden most of the year. He wipes his feet on the mat. Much less muck, even when muddy, than him forgetting to take wellies/shoes off when he comes in!

Mylittlesandwich · 09/05/2021 04:28

I prefer being barefoot but I'll put slippers on if it's cold. I think you're right that it's what you're used to. Other than when I was in halls I've always been a bare feet at home kind of person.

pooonastick · 09/05/2021 04:47

barefoot as live in a hot country. Socks when in UK .

NoIdeasForWittyNickname · 09/05/2021 04:49

@pooonastick
barefoot as live in a hot country ah well, that's fair enough, even I may be tempted Grin

I was always barefoot as a child. To the point an old friend brings it up when I see her, barefoot on lava-temperature pavements.

Now I'm #TeamFlipFlop. Wood floors are too hard.

A very good point actually - lesser of two evils! Grin
