Do you walk barefoot in your house?

Being a wimp, I always prefer to wear some sort of footwear at home – e.g. slippers in winter, flip-flops in summer (if we’re lucky enough to have a warm one). Ok, we have a fluffy monster of a dog and the indoor-outdoor boundaries get blurred in the room with the garden access, but even when we visit some our friends’ immaculately clean homes, I feel uncomfortable if I have to surrender my shoes.

However, reading many floor-related threads on MN, I see lots of comments about, for example, tiled / bare wood floors being too cold to stand on, etc. Surely, if you wear some sort of home shoes, this isn’t an issue? Or am I a slipper-wearing freak and most people just wander around their houses barefoot or in socks at most? Blush Confused

Italy in the summer. I had feet like leather.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 09/05/2021 05:24

I wear slippers, always. Kids wear socks. Or at least, they kick off their shoes and keep their socks on.

babyinthacorner · 09/05/2021 05:28

Mixture of all three! My feet are usually cold but I prefer to be barefoot, if possible. No carpets, except on stairs and landing.
DD is always barefoot and it’s a big problem - she constantly has chillblains. We have to force her to wear socks, at least.

garlictwist · 09/05/2021 05:35

No way I would freeze! Always in big fluffy slippers.

BooblePlate · 09/05/2021 05:39

We’re a shoes on house. I will wear shoes, slippers, flipflops, bare feet. Rarely socks because they are slippy.

IdblowJonSnow · 09/05/2021 05:59

Nearly always bare footed apart from a while after I'd trodden on a spider in bare feet in the dark. Shock

chloechloe · 09/05/2021 07:26

You’re a strange slipper freak! We only have wooden or tile floors (with UFH) and I only wear slippers in the depth of winter, otherwise socks or barefoot.

We’re building a new house and went to look at flooring yesterday. The first thing we asked was if we could take our shoes off!

MattyGroves · 09/05/2021 07:31

I hate wearing shoes. Almost always barefoot wherever possible. I have cold feet though so sometimes put socks on if it's really cold

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 09/05/2021 07:31

Hard wood floors most of downstairs. Save for extremes of winter most likely to be barefoot.

DanaScully53 · 09/05/2021 07:33

We have hard floors throughout and I was barefoot all the time until I was diagnosed with diabetes. When the podiatrist did my yearly check she said I had calluses due to losing fat pads and that age and hard floors are the culprit. Also diabetics should never be barefoot. So unfortunately I now wear sandals or crocs and miss barefoot walking on cold tiles.Sad

M0nstermunch · 09/05/2021 07:38

Was always socks in winter and barefoot in the summer. Since having plantar fasciitis for the last 18 months though and been advised never to be barefoot it's orthopedic slippers all of the time now indoors!

picturesandpickles · 09/05/2021 07:43

I used to take slipper socks (the type with the non-slip bobbles on the bottom) to a friend's house who had cats as I hated cat hair on my socks. They were easy to wash afterwards and I didn;t feel like I was barefooted in her house then, but also respected her shoes off rule. I just said I had cold feet.

No shoes in our house, so socks or bare feet dependent on temperature.

LemonRoses · 09/05/2021 07:45

The usually something on my feet downstairs in winter. Often barefoot when it’s warmer; if it’s very warm, the feeling of cold tiles on feet is lovely.

Twobrews · 09/05/2021 07:47

The same as MOnstermunch. As much as I love to I can't go barefoot much due to PF.

wishywashywoowoo70 · 09/05/2021 07:49

Got to have my slippers on. Hate having cold feet. Kitchen and downstairs loo are tiled floor and I can't be doing with it.

Shoes off by the door and slipped straight on bliss

Putfireonlass · 09/05/2021 07:50

Completely not the point of your thread but i was more often than not barefooted in my home with hard floors, sometime slippers. I recently damaged my hip and could barely walk. Physio pointed out I’d been shoeless for over a year (wfh) all day when previously I’d worn decent supporting shoes to work, all day. So now my Skechers go on at 7am and come off at 6pm. Not at weekends though

Dollywilde · 09/05/2021 07:51

Wearing slippers as we speak! Hate the feeling of dust on my feet (I Hoover daily but it’s somehow always there!) Plus I have a cat and it’s safer to have slippers on when I come down in the morning in case there are ‘presents’ Envy

Standrewsschool · 09/05/2021 07:52

Generally have socks on during the day. Currently barefoot. Dh and dc will have mixture of socks and bare feet.

whattodo2019 · 09/05/2021 07:53

Slippers for me. I find walking around on our hard wood floors hurts my feet! I wear Mahabad slippers. They are amazing!!

I'm always barefoot around the house and in the garden. I hate wearing anything on my feet. I like my toes to feel the ground. I know that's weird 😃. Also, when I wear anything on my feet I feel like I'm going to slip.

The soles of my feet are like bloody leather though

pitterpatterrain · 09/05/2021 07:57

I came on to mention my mahabis - same as whattodo2019, only recently got them but really lovely !

JustMeAndWheatley · 09/05/2021 07:57

Never - my house is too cold.

Always socks (or Birkenstocks). Hate wearing shoes though

Changingwiththetimes · 09/05/2021 07:58

My mother was always afyer me yo wear slippers when a child but we were always barefooted. Now that I'm ancient with teenagers of my own, I'm the obe in slippers telling them to wear slippers- mainly because they complain of cold feet!
However I have to say it is an Englosh phenomenon to ask people yo take their shoes off when they come in. I couldn't believe it when my kids friends automatically did this. I grew up in America and have never been asked yo remove my shoes. Now I'm house hunting amd even houses with quite worn flooring it's 'shoes off'. Personally I'd rather a bit of street dirt than someone's sweaty feet on my floors.
