Sofa bed in kitchen/diner?

We’re relocating and wanted to have a sofa bed for when parents or friends come to stay. The sofa we want for living room does not have option for pull out bed, but we do have room in our large kitchen/diner for a sofa too. But is this weird? Would anyone want to sleep in a kitchen?!

Well it is a bit odd, but of you have space in the kitchen and would have a sofa anyway then having a sofa bed gives you options.
How often might you use it?

• every weekend is different to once or twice a year.

I think it depends who and how often it would be used (young couples might be more keen on the idea than eldery parents for example). I don't have a particular "yuck" factor to it, but it can be quite inconvenient if you have guests sleeping and other people in the house want to get up.

Noise of fridge/freezer or boiler may keep them awake. Our cooker hood has a grid of plastic louvres on the outside of the pipe. The noise they make clacking up and down in the wind makes sleeping downstairs...tiresome. And that's in a separate room.

I think you’d have to give the guests your room and sleep on the sofa yourself as it’s not very welcoming. The fridge noise would drive me insane, and sleeping near bins, or food is not appealing.

Kitchen/diner can mean different things.

If it's actually a large kitchen with space for a table, then that would be a bit weird.

If it's actually a kitchen and a dining room that just don't have a wall in between, I don't see anything wrong with a sofa bed in the dining room part.

It wouldn’t be used regularly, maybe a few times a year. I did think we could give up our room and sleep in there ourselves, but we’ve got two small ones that still sometimes wake in the night and no guarantee we’d hear them downstairs. I’ll have to investigate other options for the living room

If you’ve got small children then what happens when they wake early and you need to get into the kitchen? It’d be a bit rude for guests to have to be woken. Also the fridge noise would drive me insane.
I’d consider a blow up bed for the lounge and then either you and your DH sleep on it with a baby monitor so you can hear your DC or if your guests wouldn’t be bothered then they sleep on it

Give each of your DC a double bed. Then when you get guests, the DC can bunk in with each other to free up a bed.

How about a blow up mattress for your lounge? I had one in-between mattresses from John Lewis, really thick thing (almost as high as a bed), pump up using a plug so no faff and surprisingly comfy. Easy to put away during the day too

Both dc having double bed is a good idea but if one or both don’t really have the floor space for a double, you could get one of those beds with a pull out single underneath too - useful in sleepovers as well

I think it really depends on size of the room really. We do have a sofa bed (well IKEA hemnes day bed) in our kitchen dinner but it's a large L shaped room with the kitchen in one section and sofa in completely different section. Never actually used it as a sofa bed as we just bought it because the hemnes was the exact size for the space. It's used as mainly a family room/play room.

We also have a utility room that has boiler, fridge freezer ect so noisy stuff out of the kitchen

Can anyone recommend a good blow up mattress? The one I have is awful. You’re on the floor by the morning.

I think my plan would be to sleep in the DC’s single and put them on the floor on whatever sleeping mats/bags they have for their activities. When mine were small they had ready beds we used in hotels -!; at grandparents. Now they have all season back woods camping gear...

Sofa beds are not particularly comfortable as a sofa so I wouldn't use it for the sofa you are likely to use the most or a lot.

I have had exactly the opposite experience! I have had the Ikea ektorp sofa bed for ten years and love it, it has a 25 yr guarantee. I had originally wanted a £££ Heal's sofa but this had been great

Sofa beds can tend to be firmer vs other sofas, depends what you like

TBH- I'd keep looking for another sofa bed for your living room (as this would be a better choice for guests), and also put a smaller sofa in your dining room so you can use that if the living room is out of action due to guests

What sofa did you want for the LR? There are SO many suppliers out there that I would expect you can find similar from one of them
