High gloss or Matt MDF Shaker ?

Which one would you choose for a small open-plan living kitchen cupboards? I am going for a crystal grey (white-ish) cupboards with a navy island, white counter tops. High gloss makes a living area looks bigger and brighter, but they just look plain and flat. Saw some lovely Shaker style pebble grey/crystal/cashmere MDF kitchen cabinets.

Easy-to-clean is my priority. MDF looks easy to clean, though not as easy as high-gloss.

Which one would you prefer?

Matt. I think gloss might dominate an open plan kitchen.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/05/2021 20:45

Matt, but I just don't like gloss and I realise that's a personal opinion. ( Fingermarks issue).

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/05/2021 23:59

Matt definitely suits most homes better imo. I don't mind gloss in some spaces - in small kitchens in modern flats for instance I think it can work well; but matt can either look more traditional or modern depending on how it's styled - so works better for open plan/versatility I think.

SnarkyBag · 04/05/2021 00:01

Matt definitely. I think gloss is already starting to look like a very dated look IMO.

gelatodipistacchio · 04/05/2021 00:05

Matte. Shaker is a traditional style and imo doesn't work with gloss

Gloss

Onandoff · 04/05/2021 06:49

I think gloss is a bit tacky looking

Matt shaker

tryingtocatchthewind · 04/05/2021 07:12

Matt, I’m struggling to imagine shaker in gloss.

Roodicus21 · 04/05/2021 09:16

I would go with Matt and then go for a white/ shiny granite countertop to reflect light.

Thank you everyone... Yes, I was leaning towards Matt shaker, and glad to see that's the popular response.

Yes gloss looks shiny first, but I have a feeling that won't be lasting for long. Plus, with Matt MDF I can go for curved cabinet doors in the island.

Thinking of having shiny quartz for the island, and just laminate for rest of the counter tops.. As there's no much counter top space we have, as there are 3 large units, and hob&sink occupies most of the space. Figured, no point in paying so much for quartz as most of them are cut out anyway.

I have laminate around the kitchen and a nicer worktop on the island it’s a great idea to save some money

Gloss is going out of fashion apparently. According to the man who sold me kitchen last week. I'm not sure I'd have a really strong colour like navy, as that will date really badly.

ComfortFoodCorner · 04/05/2021 10:35

@tryingtocatchthewind thank you... Yes, with my kitchen layout, there will be only bits and pieces of counter top left, so it's awful lot of money for quartz.. Glad to know that you have laminate mixed counter tops and you are happy with the results...:)

@Toddlerteaplease this is the kinda look I'm hoping.. not too strong blue, but humble navy .

We have shaker style doors and wouldn't have them again. Look nice but have grown to hate all the little ledges/joins that gather dust/dirt. It will be one piece flat doors for us next time.

I know someone with that colour kitchen from Howdens- I think it looks great, she has used plain grey tiles on the floor, navy splash backs and solid oak worktops.
Looks fantastic!
