To share or not share a wall?

Advice please. Live in a semi detached. Planning an extension. Would you proceed with a shared wall or own wall on boundary?

Most websites suggest shared wall. Builders have all said, own wall. Also when building an extension should I prepare for my entire garden to be ruined? It's a long garden.

I'd be interested to know the answer to this - we're planning the same and our neighbours have already built an extension with the wall coming right up to our boundary so we were going to join onto it... Would also like to know how much of the garden will be ruined as we are having the work done in the summer when we're usually out there all the time!

You can't join onto it without their permission. And get it in writing so it doesn't cause problems when you come to sell.
