Grey's out...so what's in?

New kitchen, I'm talking units. I'm very aware that grey is on its way out. But what's on its way in? Are we heading back to wood? Colour? Flat doors? Are shaker style going to stick around? I don't want to put my lovely new kitchen in and it be dated in 2 years.

I’m wondering the same. Currently looking and designing our kitchen, and have chosen, although not confirmed, a two tone grey shaker style kitchen!!

ladyinacampervan · 22/04/2021 11:43

I'm going with a bone white with wooden worktops. I don't like the grey anyway, was considering sage but I need it to be as light as possible.

I also like mussel but it might be too brown?

redpandaalert · 22/04/2021 11:45

Snap trying to choose a kitchen colour - grey out, blue can look too Beach house, don’t like dark kitchen units, cream too old fashioned, no green as surrounding by a very green garden so it will all be too green, south facing kitchen so white is too bright? I’m left with a pebble colour or perhaps a grey blue.... about to start visiting showrooms and hoping for inspiration....

SylvieHortensis · 22/04/2021 11:47

Shaker style in a neutral colour is timeless and classy.

dotdashdashdash · 22/04/2021 11:51

I don't like cleaning shaker style kitchens! It was the bane of my life in the last house (cream shaker style). I definitely want flat doors this time.

I do not think a very pale grey is "out" at all. Dark charcoal - possibly. I have a mix of light grey for wall/floor units and then a muted white on my island. The granite work top and oak drawer linings and breakfast table unifies it. DD has a very pale grey kitchen with a white flecked worktop. It reflects light and suits the flat. It was a grubby looking cream before with a black worktop in granite.

Also, do not entirely go with fashion. If you do, it will be dark green and pink! Do have flat front (if you do not want shaker) and have handles if you do not like finger prints. Lighter work top - lots of marble at the moment. Real marble is porous so be careful! Quartz, granite or solid surface is a great choice.

Remember you have to live with this, so even if some people say no to grey, lots of people will still like grey as long as it is well designed, not overbearing and works as a kitchen with decent appliances and finishes.

I have pebble in our London flat with a white quartz worktop. Looks fresh. Holiday house is a darker wood with a black worktop. I see these are coming back!

tentative3 · 22/04/2021 12:27

If you get wood then you can paint the doors to update if you decide you don't like it in the future. Personally I would be going white, the dilemma for me is worktops. I don't like granite etc, I like the look of wood but not the upkeep. I'd be perfectly happy with wood effect laminate but everyone sucks their teeth when I say that.

Ifailed · 22/04/2021 12:34

Who decided that grey was out?

Caroline147 · 22/04/2021 12:36

I’m leaning towards navy (but painted so it can be changed in future!) and flat front. Think dark green will be very dated and I worry about whether white would stay clean /nice-looking(?!).

Gubanc · 22/04/2021 12:40

The one you like the most?

tentative3 · 22/04/2021 12:53

I meant to say that obviously it's much easier to add colour via paint and accessories rather than cabinets.

isseys4xmastinselcats · 22/04/2021 13:18

unless you are going to sell your house within the next two years get the colour you like and want its you thats going to be using the kitchen all colours go in and out of fashion we went for pale blue gloss doors with mid grey tiles because thats what we like not arsed about what anyone else thinks about our kitchen i love my kitchen

PresentingPercy · 22/04/2021 13:36

I have a painted kitchen. Will I change its colour by repainting? I doubt it. Good idea in theory but the practicaliites are immense.

I tend to think neutral units are great, lighter work tops and add colur with kitchen walls. Tiles are less used now everyone has upstands. Just use a decent paint and change that.

I saw anarticle from the USA that the most preferred colur there is still dark grey. In some houses it is wonderful but not universally. I would look at top end kitchen makers and see what they are doing then find a firm with similar if you cannot afford the high prices!

DeePlume · 22/04/2021 13:38

Just choose what you like! I’ve always like navy and just had a kitchen fitted in that colour. It may be out of fashion in 2 years but I will still love it so I don’t care!

littlepeas · 22/04/2021 14:04

Just choose what you like and don’t worry about trends. We’re having a pink kitchen (F&B sulking room pink) which will not be to everyone’s taste, but I love it!

DespairingHomeowner · 22/04/2021 14:51

I think we are soon hitting peak sage ... I like it but think it may date

I agree with @PresentingPercy about what is practical and timeless, but otoh if you plan to live there for 10 years or more go with what YOU like : even if it’s dated who cares

(I say ten years thinking of what a buyer might consider old/to be ripped out)

Changingwiththetimes · 22/04/2021 14:57

White is having a big resurgence. Personally I'm going the opposite: my next kitchen is black. I'm even going to have a tile splashback after telling everyone for years to continue the worktop up to the wall units!
I've done one a couple years ago in very dark navy with white marbled stone worktops that looks really good still.
Grey is still a great neutral, and I've noticed designer kitchens in green recently, but that really is a marmite choice.

Linguaphile · 22/04/2021 15:22

Personally (and I realise this is a boring opinion), I think a soft white paired with natural finishes like wood and/or stone will always look classic. It is objectively nice to be in a bright kitchen, and whilst dark and/or very striking colours can be beautiful, the trend seems to eventually cycle back to some version of a close-to-white neutral because people like the soothing freshness of it (NB: I am not talking about the bright white on white on white look, which is too sterile IMO to be timeless). I put in a soft white kitchen with light marble effect quartz worktops and wood floors four years ago, and personally I think it looks as up to date now than it did when we put it in, if not more so because people are cycling back to white now after spending a few years with very dark kitchens. At the time, we were encouraged to go dark navy or two tone, and I’m glad we didn’t as those are starting to look very mid-late 2010s.

I0NA · 22/04/2021 15:30

I agree with @Linguaphile.

PresentingPercy · 22/04/2021 18:34

Me too. That’s close to my kitchen choices. It’s timeless. However it’s now 11 years old! It’s going to stay though.

RubyViolet · 22/04/2021 20:38

I am choosing a mix of bone white and greige (like beige. ) Wood and white marble/ stone accents. Glass, Pearl and antiqued handles.
I have a carpenter/ cabinet maker copying elements of different kitchens.
I think it depends on the room though, l have original parquet flooring and large windows and ceilings so the room can take different cabinets and colour palette mixes.

RubyViolet · 22/04/2021 20:39

All the appliances and sinks were found on EBay !!!! I couldn’t believe we were really lucky, people seem to be stripping out virtually new kitchens and selling online.

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 22/04/2021 21:03

What's in?!! Utter madness!
Surely if you like grey, then for you, it's in?
Do people not have any imagination?
Why don't you go kitchen shopping and choose something you love and not preoccupy yourself with the 'worry' that it will be dated in 2 years Hmm

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 22/04/2021 21:04
