Grey's out...so what's in?

New kitchen, I'm talking units. I'm very aware that grey is on its way out. But what's on its way in? Are we heading back to wood? Colour? Flat doors? Are shaker style going to stick around? I don't want to put my lovely new kitchen in and it be dated in 2 years.

Green lovely, but always makes me think of the dreaded 1970s avocado green bathroom suites. Any ‘definite’ colour as opposed to a neutral will always age somehow. Just pick what you like.

@Kiki275 - that’s lovely, very fresh and bright.

Not on single thing should be considered in isolation in interior design.

If you follow blindly 'what is in now' it will date - if you have a personal outlook, develop an eye and go for a combination of functional/aesthetic it will date a lot more gracefully.

I suggest you look, research and look more. What is the age of your house? That may give you suggestions too - and shape of the kitchen.

I like 1960s Italian design and looked through old issues of casabella (Italian interior design magazine, founded in 1928) and other books/journals to choose the colour scheme, types of handles (or lack of). Then tried to find similar things in contemporary design, without spending too much. My house is from the 1906s too so it just worked, I believe.

If we were to move into a 1930s house I 'd probably choose a different kitchen, same functionality but different aesthetics. Thinking about it is great fun, develop your own taste. Enjoy the journey! :)

@Kiki275 you flooring is gorgeous! Are you pleased with the quality of Invictus?

Kiki275 · 25/04/2021 10:25

@Sunflower40 so far, yes! I was worried how shiny & fake it might look but absolutely no concerns now it's down. Add in the warranty and the number of spare planks we have if needed and it'll do well long term. I couldn't justify the cost of Amtico & Karndean, it even took DH a while to consider this but he loves it more than I do.x

I’d love to see a photo of the end result!

@I0NA my confidence is under my feet at the moment so unable to - sorry :(

I0NA · 25/04/2021 12:09

That’s ok, sorry if it was cheeky of me to ask.

You sound like a very creative person with a very individual approach and I’m sorry that something/ someone has knocked your confidence.

Flossie44 · 25/04/2021 14:09

Burntout - I’m sorry your confidence is under your feet. It sounds like you are full of amazing creativity. Whoever made you drop in confidence, maybe need to see that design is a personal thing.

I adore interior design. I too research. I look at what you already have, and pick the strength already in situ. Then I expand on that. Definitely not what’s in or out. It definitely should flow from other rooms too in my opinion.

We moved to a house that we felt we could renovate in a contemporary way. However we also, at the same time, inherited some very chunky antique furniture that I can’t bare to part with.
So our design focus was turned on it’s head. It’s now a very retro, old v new. It’s working, I think.

So our aim is to make the kitchen as retro as we can but with a really chunky element
