Garden facing direction

Just wondering what people's thoughts are on the best aspect for a garden?

I know South sees the most sun through the day, but is it overwhelming?

East or West, South West is the best. Right now I'm sitting in my flat which is exact South facing garden and wished it was South West to get the best of afternoon Sun. South West is the best for me. I can bear few days of hot summer.
