Moving to Surrey

Hi all, my husband works in Farnborough Hampshire and has done for year's. But we currently live in Hertfordshire, so the traveling is getting tiresome. My question is where is a nice, low crime town to live in Surrey. I don't drive so has to have local amenities. Thanks in advance,😊

Hi, what's your budget and what are you looking for - how many bedrooms etc? What amenities do you want within walking distance? This info will help people recommend areas that might work for you.

Minikty · 14/04/2021 11:19

Ok, so our budget is up to 600,000 although less would be great. Ideally 3 bed semi or detached even better. With off street parking preferable. I'd like a town with high street shop's. We've been looking at Farnham but needed some recommendations for nice places to live for a family of 3 Two adults and one teenager.👍

Great house, road and I think the area would tick your boxes...

Cranleigh, lots of new builds here and in your Budget

MrsBertBibby · 14/04/2021 13:55

I don't recommend Redhill, travelling that way will run him into continual M25 queues. I live in East Surrey, and can't consider jobs further West.

Cestlavies · 14/04/2021 13:57

I live in Epsom. My side of Epsom is quite nice (more near the hospital area). We have a local hospital, town centre, Epsom downs race course nearby , train station-about 40 mins to London. Regular buses for transport too. A local university for creative arts.

Camandmitch · 14/04/2021 14:01

I wouldn't live in Cranleigh if you don't drive, there's no train station.

Frimley is right next to Farnborough. Woking would work too.

Bloodylegoeverywhere · 14/04/2021 14:02

I'd look at surrounding areas with a short travel.
Fleet, Church Crookham, Camberley, Sandhurst, Crowthorne etc rather than Farnborough itself.

ILoveShula · 14/04/2021 14:04

Farnham.

ILoveShula · 14/04/2021 14:06

Farnborough is very close to the Berkshire/Surrey border, so you could look at Berkshire (e.g. Sandhurst, Ascot) and Hampshire (e.g. Fleet) too.

ILoveShula · 14/04/2021 14:28

What local amenities do you need? If you want a railway station, that will narrow it down.
Is your teenager at school? Look at the school catchment areas.
If you want high street shops, Camberley or Guildford might be possibilities, as might be Bracknell and Wokingham.

If your DH doesn't mind the M3, Staines-upon-Thames, Egham, Woking or Windsor might be options.
Not all of those are in Surrey.

Ah-hem. My side of Epsom is nice too! Ewell village
MrsBertBibby · 14/04/2021 14:47

Epsom still leaves you with the worst of the West nound M25 to gight through.

This is in Farncombe, near Godalming.

Iloveshula, no my son's about to head off to university in September all being well with covid and all. A train station would be good but also a local bus service. Generally, if I can be in walking distance to a local town say about 39 to 40 mins walk from a town is fine with me. Not a rural area. Local amenities would be eateries and supermarkets but also some high street shop's would be great. It doesn't have to be like central London just a nice friendly town.😁

Cestlavies, thank you Epsom sound's great to, I will have a look at that area aswell.😊

Dorking is really friendly. And I've found it to be full of (nice) surprises, pretty and surrounded by countryside if that's your thing.

It's not very big though, might be boring for your teenager. But if he's off to uni soon maybe that doesn't matter.

Farnham was on our list of possibilities. Probably has more than Dorking. It just wasn't as close to family for us.

Minikty · 14/04/2021 15:24

Thanks camandmitch,👍

CraftyGin · 14/04/2021 15:24

You want to be near the M3.

Minikty · 14/04/2021 15:27

Beggingforsleep, yes we've been looking in Farnham it seems a nice place so thank you 😊

I was going to suggest dorking as well. Leatherhead is also another option. They have a town centre as well.

Cestlavies · 14/04/2021 17:47

Guildford as well have many amenities-hospital, town centre, university. There’s so many options is Surrey really.
@SoosanCarter I didn’t say it wasn’t nice. I just said where I live is Blush. Ewell village is very nice. I had a friend that lived there in a private road. But it’s a bit further away from the town centre etc. I always thought it’s more “Ewell” than Epsom.

ILoveShula · 14/04/2021 19:15

Leatherhead and Epsom are quite a hike

Minikty · 16/04/2021 08:22

Callinggloriaaa, that's a lovely house actually my favourite type of house with the garage underneath and the house up the steps. You must be phychic,😍👍
