Filling wall holes

Not done much wall redecoration but am doing dd's bedroom today. Just removed lots of screws holding a shelf and need to fill these holes which are about 2-3 cm deep.

Plan to use a ready mixed filler that dh has in the shed and which seems ok. Do I need to fill the hole with something like paper before applying filler? Otherwise I suppose the filler would only be covering a shallow area and wonder if that matters?

Nope just bing the filler in and smooth it flat with a spatula. There is a bit of a knack to getting a good flat finish but you can and it easily it it is a bit rough. Make sure you give the filler a really good mix before you use it or you send up with really liquids bits and really dry bits and it is harder to use.

Ok then - I'm just going to whack it on and let it do its thing!

you can also sand it down when its dry if your finish is not smooth - that is easier for me
