Asbestos garage roof

I live on a street where lots of the houses have an asbestos garage roof including our direct neighbours. They are talking about extending into the garage but it doesn’t sound like they have thought about the need to get specialists in for this.

Anyone got expertise here by any chance?

I’m a bit nervous about the work going ahead and the dust etc blowing our way. We don’t know them well and don’t want to offend them but also don’t want to regret not saying something.

Surely whoever does the building work will advise them? They wouldn't want to be working with asbestos without removing it properly.

It’s not that massive a thing if done properly...it does need approved contractors but just people who know what they are doing. www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/a14.pdf

Asbestos cement board is low risk as it’s a bonded product with low risk low % asbestos content.

Yup agree with pp. The mere mention of the word Asbestos terrifies most people but I'm sure there will be no issues & even if they are complete cowboys, the only risk is to themselves really. It's (dare I say it) mostly very easy to handle in a safe way.

^ we had it at our last property. The council sent someone round to assess, they just drove by and had a look. They said we could remove it ourselves and, as long as the waste is double bagged, we could take it to the local skip to be disposed of.

'doesn't need approved contractors' sorry typo above.

My mums just had this done - apart from the contractors wearing masks / suits & having to dispose of it in a specialist site, there wasn’t much to it.

Smokeahontas · 12/04/2021 16:48

When I say contractor - it wasn’t a specialist. Just the builder.

Hugely reassuring. Thank you all! It is bonded cement. He’s doing the work himself I think. That’s set my mind at ease. Thank you so much for your responses. Much appreciated Smile
