Can this fire surround be painted?

I moved into this house in December and have done loads of work already. The front room is in fairly good nick for the time being, but the fireplace is the sort of colour that looks like it's nicotine stained Envy
I'm thinking of painting it white with something like chalk paint or Frenchic. Is this possible?

I'd also like to paint to 'marble effect' hearth and inlay (if that's what it's called) - again, is it possible?

TIA

If you attempt painting the fire don't forget to use heatproof paint.

I painted the wood surround on ours using furniture paint. You can get stone look paint from a specialist manufacturer. That is safe for the hearth and close to the fire itself.

Good point @Mumdiva99

Thanks @GuyFawkesDay - I've googled and found stone look specialist paint so will try that!!
