Selling and buying: do I need my solicitor to oversee both?

I have sold my house and had an offer accepted on a bungalow.
My solicitor has sent me two lots of paperwork - one to deal with the buying of the bungalow and the other with the selling of my house.

I can’t remember my solicitor doing both of these jobs when I moved last time. DH thinks he made a mistake instructing the solicitor to both buy and sell but I’m not sure about anything any more!!

Is it common for the solicitor to deal with a sale? If not, who does it?

Yes. The solicitor does both.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 10/04/2021 12:48

I’ve always had a solicitor do both.

SlidesAndLadders · 10/04/2021 12:48

Who else is going to deal with land registry, your mortgage provider, your vendor's solicitor, your buyer's solicitor...?

JaneExotic · 10/04/2021 12:55

@SlidesAndLadders That's EXACTLY what I asked DH!

Our solicitor did both and billed them separately.

PurBal · 10/04/2021 13:20

We instructed ours to do both. Technically you could use two different solicitors but I don't see why you would.

Thanks everyone

Yes we have just moved and used the same solicitor for buying and selling.

eurochick · 10/04/2021 13:22

It's completely standard for the solicitor to deal with both.

Shorthairlady · 10/04/2021 13:31

Definitely use solicitor to do both. I had to use two different ones before and it was a right faff. One solicitor was definitely better than the other which added to the stress.

pilates · 10/04/2021 13:34

It would be very unusual not to

We used two different solicitors last year for reasons I won't bore you with, was a ballache, I don't recommend it!
