Matt white metro tiles + grey grouting. What colour sealant?

So we're having matt white metro tiles and grey grouting put in. However, we forgot the matching sealant and we can't find any online or in stores. The wall is already half tiled!

Our builder thinks the tile joint (where the two shower walls meet) should be in a sealant which matches the grout otherwise it will look odd.

The options are:

  1. Find the closest grey match sealant.
  2. Joint in white sealant - might look odd?
  3. Use a clear sealant

Any advice/thoughts on what to do? Don't want to make a mistake and we can't decide as hard to visualise.

Thanks!

Your builder is right and I have just had my bathroom done exactly as you describe. And the finish has to be grey.

Can you not take a piece of the hard set piece of the grout and go to a local plumbers merchants. And match it up. They are open if you are buying -browsing is not allowed and you are definitely buying.

There is also a very helpful tile store (nationwide) that I have been going to during lockdown - again I have bought stuff online to pick up but they will answer a question if you are standing in the doorstep/doorway as you collect. They manager there looked at the tile and told us the best grout colour and matching sealant to get. You just have to buy the grout online on your phone to get around the regulations and then pick it up.

Or wait until 12th?

Hi thanks. Fitter is keen to finish as job has already taken 3 weeks longer to finish than expected and he wants to done by 12th. I've asked him to match the grey as closely as he can. It won't be a perfect match but hopefully can get it close enough. Live and learn for the next project!

And remember sealant often gets replaced. It's not the end of the world if it isn't perfect.

White sealant looks fine imo

Geneticsbunny · 09/04/2021 17:30

Use clear sealant? You won't notice it then

We have white tiles with turquoise grout and white sealant. Looks fine; in fact dark sealant would have looked odd I think.

I'd go for white too.

We've just had exactly this done and we had white sealant put in. The plumber did it without consulting and whilst I was initially annoyed, I now much prefer it. You don't really see it, and I'd imagine grey sealant would have to be absolutely spot on perfect everytime else any small flaws would be very noticeable.

@PeachandBee that is a concern. I've seen some pictures on Pinterest where the grey line is wonky. Our fitter is meticulous but I'm still worried about the risk!
