Detached house for £600 out of London with train link

Hello,
We are in North London and priced out for our first detached home for a budget around £600k. I know that we can get some nice terraced or semis within this range in outer London but we prefer detached. We have been thinking to move away to some quieter place with train link to London. What we need is some amenities such as grocery stores within walking distance and a secondary school.

We are flexible to move to any place as long as it's quiet and good residential area with some amenities and train link to London.

I've been doing a lot of searches but can't seem to get anywhere closer to what we are looking for.

Can anyone suggest some good places for us?

Thanks

I need train to London to travel out of the country.

Sussex definitely a winner then because we have Gatwick and it’s this side of London so a short, easy train ride.

TeeBee · 07/04/2021 18:28

Eh? The coast is usually a couple of degrees warmer than inland.

Which is your favourite London airport to fly from?

BlowDryRat · 07/04/2021 18:29

Most of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and north Hertfordshire would work. Ampthill, Flitwick, Hitchin, Milton Keynes, St Alban's, Woburn, the mich-derided but actually not bad Luton... Just not Harpenden.

Ah, crossed posts. fair enough. I live on the South coast and we probably get the best of UK weather. It does get cold in the winter, obviously, but some winters are pretty mild by UK standards. We also get some scorching summer weather- too hot for me but most people seem to like it!

Mostly Gatwick, Stansted and few times Heathrow. Well airport is not an issue as long as there is a train link to London. Once I'm in London, I'll find may way :)

Warwickshire! We can be in Euston in 50 mins

If you don't need to commute to London, look around Cambridge area. Cheaper (not the actual city but surrounding towns) and easy to get to stansted for flights out of the country

Princes Risborough Bucks or Bicester Oxon.

PicsInRed · 07/04/2021 18:31

It's 68 mins on the train from Bristol Parkway to London Paddington when regular service is running and plenty of decent houses for £600k in the area, new builds in the Stokes or village living in Almondsbury. There are decent state schools in the north of the city, plenty of shops and a big nature reserve.

If you were only going to a central London office 2 or 3 days a week it could do nicely.

She means to buy for £600,000, not rent for £600pcm

Thanks Change. Fucked up market when you can buy a 3 bed detached house for less than you can rent a flat

Petersfield Hampshire

If you just want proximity to Gatwick/Eurostar, look along the Brighton mainline. Lots of nice 3-4 bed detached houses in that price range in the Hassocks/Burgess Hill/Hayward’s Heath area. Lovely countryside, and those towns have reasonable amenities.

Look on Righmove, search within a ten-mile radius of Lewes, and limit it to “detached” only. You get a couple of hundred houses priced £550-650k.

What's wrong with the North? We do have electricity up here, you know, and running water ... We've even got airports.

Wokingham in Berkshire. Good-sized market town with good schools and a range of housing. Lots of other amenities. Near Bracknell and Reading for bigger shopping, hospitals etc, easy to get to London by train, else Heathrow by bus via Reading or Gatwick by train from Wokingham.

Weather, my dear! That's the problem up North.

Grimbelina · 07/04/2021 18:48

How much do you travel? By plane or train? What about nearish Ebbsfleet or Ashford for the Eurostar?

Over budget, but very large so guessing there is something cheaper/smaller:

Lewes +40 miles is already on alert. I mostly get new homes, I hate new homes.

Beds remind me of Luton Grin

Bit daft to rule out the very rural Harlington because the Bedfordshire contains a town that you are snobby about. Especially as from Harlington (or Flitwick or Bedford) station, you can get a direct train to Gatwick.

Villages around Milton Keynes - 30 mins on a fast train into Euston.

Horsham? Hop skip and a jump to Gatwick (inc easy taxi for emergencies) and great schools. www.rightmove.co.uk/property/79067487
